Stop 'soldiering on' by going to work when sick and making others ill, health secretary says

Britons should stop "soldiering on" by going to work when sick and making others ill, the health secretary says.

He made the comments in a joint session of the Health and Social Care and the Science and Technology committees. The UK now has the capacity to carry out over 500,000 tests a day, with new labs to be opened next year to double that number."Afterwards we must use it, not just for coronavirus, but everything," he told MPs.

Try increasing SSP then.

Well if the health secretary wants to pay our full wages when sick then no problem. Honestly, these people just don’t live in the real world

Apply for Charity monies for missed days to pay the bills!

Alright if you are paid full pay when off, SSP is a joke, try living on the Hancock

Even the people who have company sick pay, it's not unlimited.

Pet peeve of mine - presenteeism!! And I work in the public sector with generous sick leave provisions. Still colleagues come into work sick and I can't for the life of me figure out WHY!!!

Uh oh, I’m feeling a little under weather, I better take a few days and go sick for the 5th time this year...said no one ever who didn’t want disciplinary action and potential job loss. MattHancock better have a word with RishiSunak so the treasury can cover the expense.

Maybe if it was made compulsory for companies to give sick pay then people wouldn't feel the need to soldier on.

This donkey needs to get with the real world. We get questioned and if hit triggers face disciplinary action. This is local government policy!

They haven't clue companies use disciplinary for sickness mine is 3 occasions or 7 days. People will just end being dismissed if you listen to this fool.

I'll stop 'soldiering on' when this government raise sick pay, allowing me to keep paying my rent and keep food on the table for my kids.

If the government made legal guarantees that staff would be paid their FULL PAY from day one then yes it would work

Tell the f**kers to give proper sick pay so that people don't have to go to work when they are ill.

These guys act as if people can afford to just not go to work. Increase sick pay

U.B.I for all

Been saying this for years. Nothing worse than getting on the train and seeing somebody absolutely KO'D with Flu/Cold and clearly en route to work. Moving forward, stay home

Has he not met anyone’s boss? Or seen the paltry rates of SSP that a lot of workers are faced with if they’re sick?

Like to see mps living off like 70 quid a week or whatever sick pay is

Start paying more than £15 a day sick leave and supporting 0 hour contracts that don't get sick leave at all and maybe people would be able to afford to take time off when they were sick.

Ah yes let’s blame the people who couldn’t get furlough or sick leave

yes lets stop going to work when sick and face one of these outcomes; 1, getting told off by your boss and put in their bad books 2, Don't get paid 3, Get fired It's insane how out of touch and privileged this person is

Finally! It used to drive me up the wall when people would turn up with nasty coughs and in some caes talking about the bad stomach they’d had the night before.

When people diagnosed with cancer are quite lawfully asked to read & sign the company sickness policy to make it easier for the employer to take management action, this bloke wants to give his head a wobble.

Anyone working for me deciding to become a hancock malingerer can seek alternative employment. Gobshite

Yes in fact do carry on and take a test and if it's positive travel up and down the country Till Your Hearts content if it's alright for government officials to do it it's ok for Joe Public it's one rule for them and another for us

If I don’t go to work I don’t get paid, not everyone has a job that pays you when off sick. Most people have no choice but to soldier on and earn to pay their bills.

It's what Brits do.

Everyone only works for money. I go in sick as I want to be paid

Get a fucking grip 😂

Maybe the governments mixed messages are the problem mr health secretary

Some people can’t afford not to. So me employers discipline people and fire them for multiple absences or exclude them from promotions. People don’t always have a choice. Don’t get me started on that flipping Bradford Factor.

MattHancock So everybody with a sniffle start of runny nose, slight cold is to have a day off ? You obviously have no idea but we should already know that after the past 8 months ! piersmorgan can you sort him out please

Given that for the last 6 months people who present with no signs of illness have been told to stay at home and isolate they may need to redefine ‘sick‘

One of Lowest sick pay in OECD it’s not surprising

When was the last time the health secretary had to apply for a real job? Try getting a job with 1-2 periods of sickness per year. Back in the real world that’s considered “poor performance.”

Unless you work in or go to school...

EARN YOUR OWN MONEY & TRY LIVING mancock! Then YOU WILL SEE REAL LIFE!!

Errr, who can afford to be of with a sniffle? We don't all have bosses who pay thousand for takeaways and tell us to stay off with a sniffle. Out of touch.

We are a peculiar nation in that regard. It’s somehow seen as ‘noble’ to go into work when you’re sick. Especially in those jobs with statutory sick pay: stay at home!!

This just shows how COMPLETELY DETACHED, UNREALISTIC & DELUSIONAL Small Mancock really is!! 1) if you have flu YOU CAN'T GET UP! 2) NOBODY GETS TESTED FOR FLU or any other bog standard virus/illness!! 3) ABSOLUTELY NO NEED to skive off if you have a cold! GET A REAL JOB &...

My old boss used to have a rule. If you’re sick you come in and make an appearance, then you go home.

Might want to tell businesses that they need to offer more than 5 instances of absence before disciplinary action then Matt 🙄 The majority of us don't exactly choose to go in when sick, we have absolutely no choice in it.

Well some have too in education. Or else the students will not be getting the education. I've been off for an infection which again they said its COVID but not....at 111 service so I've not feeling the best but not contagious but I feel I'll need to be in......

Needs to speak to the companies who won’t accept sickness

We soldier on because of either no sick pay or the wonderful £94.00 per week you think we can all live on.

If I stay at home and watch his smug face on telly it makes me feel worse. People don’t got to work with illness out of spite for the nation you chutbag they go because if they don’t what they get Sat sick pay doesn’t pay the bills if they are even lucky enough to get that.

In local government, it is my experience that, although U are entitled to sick pay, U are expected NOT to be off sick, no matter how genuinely ill. There is a heavy duty 'sickness procedure' to act as a deterrent. That's why most people came to work with their germs!

No clue whatsoever. Most people only get paid the miserly sick pay. Even if you do get paid fully, you will be on disciplinary if you take too many days off. Trying to imagine education/health care continuing if teachers, NHS staff took a day off every time they had a sniffle.

Ha easier said than done if you’re the sole earner and your family is depending on you.

does Hancock understand how 0 hours contracts work if you don't work you don't eat.

Tell that to my boss who believes statutory sick pay is enough to live on...

Then make it financially viable to stay at home 🤷‍♀️

Pay us then I’ve just had 3 months off on £95 a week next cough or cold I get I need to go to work

How about make it affordable to self isolate first, then patronise people for not following the rules.

Lets all become lazy bastards then! The country is all ready full of wankers that have a week off when they split a toe nail.

Advice that I was always a firm advocate of, pandemic or not.

Not everyone gets full sick pay! Get real.

Clearly has never been threatened with a sickness interview due to a high Bradford score because you have had two occasions off sick ......

Does that include zero hours?

We’re not soldiering on. We’re made to feel guilty for not going in and have sickness policies used as a threat. The first question in our back to work meeting is ‘are you aware of the impact to your colleagues’. That’s why we don’t go sick.

Health Secretary is telling you and me to stop acting like soldiers when we are feeling indisposed to foil others from contracting whatever form of sickness we seem to be nursing in our body. Very instructive. It's nice to see our diagnostics abilities improving geometrically.

Many companies had 'if u arent well enough to come in office then u arent well enough to work from home' policy Whilst at same time taking action if you had more than 'allowable' number of unexpected sick days This encouraged spread of colds etc Maybe this will now change

Yeah so every HR department in the land can fire up their Bradford Scale calculator's and sanction everyone.

I did go on and have two breakdowns and no job to prove it. But if you do take time off employers discipline you. It's a lose lose situation.

The first sensible thing this man has said all year, now if he can just make sure people are paid proper sick pay from day one and can afford and are encouraged to stay home with no attendance management/ consequences if they are unwell that'll be grand.

Zero-hour contracts bruh😑

Does the Health Secretary have to survive on £55 per week if he has time off

When you put the fear factor into people's lives by taking away employment rights - what do you expect?

I'm sure this has absolutely nothing to do with the poor state of sickness pay in this country. 🤡

That's easy said if you can afford to throw grands around on takeaways!!

Isn’t this article about 10 months late?

Typical Tory don't know what real life is like bollocks.

It’s because we have been forced to by our employers. This isn’t a new thing. What I want to know now is, if our non-eu employee rights will allow us to be off sick without the risk of being sacked?

Firstly not all workers are entitled to sick pay. Secondly some employers make their staff feel guilty for taking time off when sick. Then that’s not to mention all the work they have to do when they come back because no one has covered for them

How sick do I have to be before I don’t soldier on?

Dozy **** clearly never worked in a place where they count your sick days and cumulative days within a short period before getting rid of you due to work incapability processes. Not all staff have a manager who would spend £50000 taxpayers money on staff food for soldiering on?

Yeah. Perhaps he should be telling employers that not their staff.

MattHancock the reasons are that people don't all get sick pay and SSP doesn't pay first three days plus people risk losing their jobs if they have days off every time they have a cold. Try putting your brain in gear occasionally. commonsense outoftouch

So what about those who don't get sick pay, the self employed who don't get any money to pay bills if they don't work, those who work for agency's or on zero hours contract? Not really 'soldiering on' more surviving

And get paid ssp if your entitled to it. Also risk getting disciplined and risk the chance of future jobs?

When you've been furloughed with your feet up for 8 months (on only 80% pay!!) like me you will realise how much you miss work!

Hello, please check out my gig if you need any kind of graphic design.

If you can continue to work from home while ill then do so, don't have to use sick days then. Discuss with your employer and see what can be done. Even if you are doing a physically based job, there may be a way around it

Are you having a laugh? Or just a bit of a titter? I thought this must have been from last year, not 10 minutes ago!

And you get punished for it!

Ive soldered on my whole life , not about to stop now on advice of a corrupt goverment and health service

Some people think they're better that others by going to work sick. I think most of them just do it because then they can mock people who do stay home if they're sick by showing off how 'tough' they are. Usually these are the pricks that no one but the other pricks like anyway.

I agree, however, many many people do not get paid if they don't go to work.

Stated by someone who clearly doesn't work for a company who will happily sack you if you do stay off when sick
