The Labour leader has allowed his party to be riven by sectarianism, antisemitism and Brexit, says Guardian columnist Polly Toynbee

The nightmare has happened. The worst of men is elected prime minister. The hardest of times lie ahead. Unfit in every way for any kind of office, Boris Johnson takes up the reins of absolute power bestowed on any leader with such a majority.

Polly Toynbee should take a leaf out of Corbyn's book. He has campaigned fairly and with humility despite appalling vilification, the worst of which has come from people supposedly on his side. Shame on you Polly Toynbee for the viciousness of your latest attack.

How did Jeremy Corbyn go from being very popular last election to extremely unpopular this time? It’s in the papers silly.

FFS shall we get robbiewilliams in for PM? I mean, it’ll probably go horribly wrong but he’s a lad, i’n’e Ooh, all dynamic and cheeky and that! And that one time he ripped his suit off and went into Rock DJ because Boris was boring him! Japes!

'The manifesto was....magnificent?' Really The fact it had no economic credibility just reinforced everyones opinions of the labour leadership. It was a godsend to the Tories.

So true 👍

Very succinct and accurate

Not impressed with you right now, . You carried water for dubious claims and a trumped-up moral panic. Corbyn might not be scintillating, but he had integrity and positive vision way beyond Boris.

Still no acknowledgement or apology for his part shameless jeremycorbyn

Yeah I can see agility, charisma and credibility pouring out of Boris the yellow jhonson... Huh... Its the media and corporates who made sure Boris wins.

Simply not true, we would have been so lucky to have a man like Corbyn leading the country

Oof.

He has been up and down the country and still looks chipper whereas Boris looks worn out.

Nah! He is still a great man ahead of his time

misssfitt I think Polly, Owen Jones & chums were significant contributors on that particular journey.

Actually, it was his electoral platform

Corbyn allowed Corbynism to become more important than a party of service to the people.

“Devoid of agility , charisma...”How about anti-Semitic, Marxist and anti-British? When will Guardian columnists see clearly?

You can't claim that Farage gave Johnson the premiership and write this on the same day.

FWIW, from my far off vantage point in the antipodes, when Corbyn became leader of Labour my opinion at the time was that as a potential PM he was unelectable. That is, the British electorate would not give Labour govt if he was leader.

The media has...

What an utterly depressing load of nonsense. Genuinely feel sorry for people this negative 👎

We have go back to the true values of the Labour Party . Let’s get a leader with true credibility and dignity . Stand up Jess

I respect this man he is a hard liner but his heart is so in the right place !

Labours post-2015 research identified the correct reasons it lost, namely that working class people viewed Labour types as distant middle class authority figures that never spoke about the things ordinary people speak about.

pollytoynbee getting the knives out. She thought he was marvellous not that long ago. I would also say “charisma” is not what he lacks. The barnstorming old Trot galvanised a cult following of LUNATICS chanting his name in a Hitleresq display of affection based on ... charisma

Oh shut up!

Too right - the media (particularly that owned by tax dodgers) will always be against Labour, a Labour leader has to be smarter & cleverer than Corbyn, who should go as soon as new leader elected but Labour have to be a fierce if reduced opposition from the start

The lesson has been learned. Do not ignore the will of the British People.

So London Luvvies - we had your people's vote yesterday - you lost AGAIN. Its called Democracy by the way. Suck it up.

The policies were right (a part from Brexit which was a disaster) but the messaging was a disaster (and the media being against you is no excuse - the media is always against the left and if you want to win you need to learn to counter it which Labour failed to do.

😂 😂 😂 😂 The left are turning on Corbyn like a den of rats 😂 😂 😂

Oh shut up Polly, you know 0.

However controversial Blair was, Labour have not been able to rise to their feet since.

Corbyn hasn't just led Labour into defeat because he is a terrorist supporting anti Semite, he is also a hard left Marxist whose manifesto was comprehensively rejected. Toynbee simply proving she hadn't a clue, again.

I've never heard of Polly but I know her: the career shill who makes Billionaires proud--not of anyone working of course--but of themselves for creating that envy which has us all slaying one another...

AbdxlA The Guardian newsroom is elated this morning.

Because Boris has all of them 🤷🏻‍♀️

Didn't Corbyn almost beat May?....that must mean Boris is more popular than Corbyn ..what do you think?

That's not what you were doing before the election!

JeremyCorbyn = MichaelFoot

Corbyn an accidental leader. Nobody thought he would win, but he tapped a strong seam in LP & young people. Nobody forced those activists to canvass day after day in pouring rain. We can't lose that idealism & energy.

Blair has led the UK into the abyss and Polly is also culpable.

A big problem in the UK is that less than 2% of the electorate belong as members to parties like Labour. A vanguard has literally gained control of the party manifesto. Until it has policies to appeal to the crucial middle 15% of the electorate it will never with a majority

Time for David Milliband, a centrist David ... he seems the sort that can outmaneouvre Boris. Pragmatic, ambitious and one that a nationalist tinge won't seem too odd on him. Cut Boris down from his own support base with the inevitable blunders while rebuilding the left.

Ah yes, if only Labour had a more moderate leader then they could win big like the uh *checks notes* Liberal Democrats

Get ready for piss poor heathcare

The anti-semitism card, lack of charisma and an unclear political stance is why Labour lost. That was obvious way before the election was called. JC should have cared more about his country by stepping down and giving the party a chance, than about his ambitions as a PM

You could equally be describing his rival. Devoid of agility, charisma and credibility.

Polly Toynbee por qué es una cosa

You're wrong there! brexit has been the issue!

How dare you blame him for the moral and spiritual bankruptcy of this country. A pretty low intelligence headline that totally fails to understand the seismic damage of psychological warfare conducted by social media and the press

Thing is, we've known this for years, so why wasn't anything done to revitalise the party?

Propaganda has let your country into the abyss... 🤦‍♀️

Remainers like Toynbee have cost us a labour victory - the first genuine potential left-wing government of my lifetime. I am not allowed here to express the depth of my anger and contempt for her and her fellow anti democrats that has brought this to pass.

Bin the Guardian.

With all my sympathy to the Labour Party, I always thought Corbyn is their weakest point. I see him as empty, deceptive, lacks charisma and has dictatorship's aspirations. He should have resigned about 2 years ago.

Voters are to blame the ones who looked at the state of your country and looked at the state of johnson his lies, his record and voted for him anyway. It is on them. Voters screwing themselves.

No he hasn’t, the English people have played their rascist card

I supported the Leader throughout a genuine man of integrity but he was clearly a toxic brand for the voters of the Country. Labour has to learn how to win elections otherwise we let everyone down. You have to have broad appeal not just in the membership.

bendashper Polly can go to Hell

I am really disappointed with recent headlines like this and will not renew my subscription going forward.

Why didn’t you run such an article previously!?!?

Well, this is when I sit and get the popcorn out. The sheep voted for a very lovable wolf. They deserve what's coming.

People themselves chose to walk into an abyss. A Guardian should always be above over simplified dumb-downed editorials like this.

Corbyn has been a disaster for Labour a move back to rhe centre is the only way forward

Brilliant piece 👏🏻

The guardian has no legitimacy amongst the left wing anymore, it’s a failing paper read by a few stuffy liberals who think Blair was the 2nd coming

nomfup the abyss gazes also

Corbin should go tonight.

I know exactly what Labours problem is , but I'll keep it to myself for now

Yeah, yeah. We see you...

This is a shitty article. Good job on keeping that trend alive.

a thought that should had to be expressed a lot of time ago

yes...yes

Centrists pushing the soft brexit peoples vote crap. Well done.

The Guardian will be gone in 12 months.

When he dragged Labour back from the last abyss you all loved him, but wanted to travel further and further to the left. The UK is not and hopefully never will be a far left union. You all pushed in the wrong direction, as Cons went further right, you should have filled the centre

er_mean Oh right - after being a cheerleader for the fool

With the help of gutterpress like the guardian

Last charismatic PM we had is still trying to wash the blood of Iraqi children from his hands. I’d rather a man of peace than some smug tit who is happier taking selfies with celebs than spending time helping their constituents.

As you state the manifesto was magnificent. I agree. Will you be arguing for the party to stand by this manifesto and find more agile leadership? Or will you join those calling for a shift to the right?

Oh my God ! I do appreciate Polly Toynbee very much, but the reality of the situation is FAR more complex than this 24/24 Corbyn-bashing ! I am sorry to have my say !

And yet you've spent the last 4 years telling everyone to vote for him.

pollytoynbee really? Really? Wasn’t it you the Tory backing Journos that support a racist hate filled UK that destroyed hope. Own up to your responsibility in this ffs

We don't want to go back to the days of New Labour.

Isn't that a bit harsh

she’s about as two faced as it gets at this point Zero cred

The Nancy Pelosi of the UK

Oh do absolutely get in the bin.

He has indeed. Anyone paying attention could see it but, alas the ones who should have were too busy congratulating themselves prematurely

While Corbyn has said he won't run for another election if he had a shred of decency for all those Labour MPs that lost their seats due to him he would resign this morning

The centrists all lost their seats, so you blame Corbyn with Labour's progressive agenda, duh!

Here we go. The knives are out. Let’s not vilify Corbyn. He’s already said he’d go. Yes, Labour must look at what went wrong, but let’s be constructive. I don’t think turning on your own is particularly helpful right now.

Time to kick when someone is down. Learning from us quick.

Bollocks - did you miss all the rallies he had with thousands of people attending?

The mainstream media in UK actually hate the Labour Party esp. JC. That's why negative coverage abt them over the yrs, worse with personal attacks during last few mths before GE19 Just feel pity for those ppl in poverty, as they are the biggest losers now.

Typical Guardian - not looking at what actually happened and blaming the rich. “City types prefer Brexit to paying higher tax” ... London voted for Labour and remain ... it’s the north labour lost, the regular people, the hard workers.... Labour is out of touch

Here and elsewhere parties have gone to the extreme. People want support but do not want a dictatorship from either party

Sure..you deserve Blair and Johnson..

marioricciard18 I could have told you more than a year ago.

Not exactly a recipe for success, was it? Does your Labour Pty have a death-wish?

Like you did not see this coming?

that's right kids, no free sh!t coming. time to let the grown-ups lead the country

The media has a lot to answer for in how they have treated jeremycorbyn

Credibility?! It's pollytoynbee and the that have lost credibility. You have targeted smears at a genuinely decent progressive leader for years. Thank you for standing for nothing and enabling a hateful Tory government!

tl;dr Corbyn should have leaned harder into unpopular Remain which would have made him more popular. More trash from trash.

Beaten black and blue by austerity and we voted for more.....incredible.

You could flip that article “void of any sense of a fair go, unprecedented media bias, lies, smears, doctored videos etc, Corbyn done the best he could!”

Please save me from this centrist bollocks

Stop! Seriously. I've met Mr. Corbyn in person and he has lots of charisma. He lost because racism is stronger than common sense

Hell yes!

But I thought all you remoaners types said it was cos we're stupid racists and believed what the right wing media tell us?

Yup. All far too late now. Should have booted Corbyn after the last result. Well, he should never of had been leader in the first place.

It's too exaggerate, former leaders are worst

Get in the sea Toynbee. Corbyn has more charisma and class in his little finger than the whole host of hacks and media shills who have harried him for the last four years. Corbyn has lead the way. Now we take off the gloves. And the fight back begins.

Sometimes I wonder if that was part of the plan. He seemed too blasé.

Even the Grawnyad now admits Corbyn is a wanker!! Success

What rot from Polly Toynbee. I guess they got who they wanted, UK's Trump in Boris Johnson. What a disgrace!

Now you'll have a right wing leaning leader who'll pander to the right wing press and who'll do nothing to oppose Tory dismantling of social services.

And its glorious.

Let's not go too personal, but I didn't really want to see if Michael Foot's 1983 policies could still lose in 2019

A different leader wouldn't have made much difference as it was a 'Brexit' election. 'Brexit' was the policy that mattered the most to a lot of people.

Your boy took a hell of a beating

Who could possibly have guessed that would happen?

Oh... so now you see it?!

Maybe if you hadnt spent the last 4 year slating him at every opportunity he might have had a punchers chance, but sure.

Oh piss off. The media including you all as well as lies from all fronts led to this.

I wouldn’t say he was uncharismatic that was Ed Miliband

Kick this clot out. UKLabour needs a monumental shake up. Corbyn and his clique can FOXTROT OSCAR. Momentum can sling their hook. Back to the drawing board. Back to the CENTRE. The next GE could be five years away: Is Corbyn going to hang around “reflecting” all that time?

Corbyn's biggest flaw was pandering to people like you. That's why we offered a second referendum and that's why we lost.

MoBelhadj

no he hasn’t, you have by constantly posting lies about him. All you media are the same. Thanks for ruining people’s lives

If you think you can stop socialism, you are completely wrong

and1is5

UK 2019. When Idiocracy won a majority.

He dragged labour into deep water and drowned them !!

Why do his glasses always look like they need a good cleaning

Hahahahaha Prolly Toynbee has gone all CorbynOut 🤣🤣🤣

Lies won!

Looks like the new revolutionaries are eating the old ones already.

Someone's been playing too many role playing games.

Yep.
