BREAKING: Derek Chauvin denied new trial hours before sentencing for George Floyd’s murder

Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was denied a motion for a new trial just hours before his sentencing for murdering black man George Floyd.

Hennepin County Judge Peter Cahill denied the defense team’s motion on Friday and will not hold a hearing on jury misconduct. Chauvin’s lawyers had asked that their client get probation and pushed for a retrial. They argued that Chauvin did not get a fair trial due to prosecutorial as well as jury misconduct and errors of law during his trial in April.

Cahill said defense attorney Eric Nelson did not show that the court denied Chauvin the right to a fair trial or abused its discretion. The judge filed his ruling on Thursday and it was made public on Friday morning. Defense lawyers frequently request new trials after conviction but judges rarely grant them.
