Lockdown had 'major impact' on mental health, new research suggests

Lockdown had a major impact on the UK's mental health, including increased rates of suicidal thoughts, according to new research.

Just over 3,000 adults in the UK were surveyed and a range of mental health factors were considered, including depression, loneliness, suicide attempts and self-harm.The study found suicidal thoughts increased from 8% to 10% and they were highest among young adults , rising from 12.5% to 14%. "It suggests that the huge social and economic uncertainty associated with Covid-19 may be causing some people to feel hopeless. However, there is currently no evidence that the suicide rate is increasing."Young people, women, individuals from more socially-disadvantaged backgrounds and those with pre-existing mental health problems reported the worst mental health outcomes in the initial phase of the national lockdown.

The participants in this study have been followed throughout the pandemic, with further results due to be published in the coming months.

We know this but the government don’t care they are to busy destroying the economy and making themselves millions from this silly virus

Wow new research.Never knew or been told about this before..thanks BBC again for this breaking news story...

As someone who's partner tried to commit suicide and a friend who did commit suicide during lockdown I can say how much the lockdown affected my and my partners mental health, still recovering now

Its certainly having an affect on my mental health. Cant get out to any off the things that help.

I love my family and wouldn’t want to be locked down without them. I can see people that live alone. That would be rough.

Yes many tried to tell the BBC that while they were busy terrifying people.

No! How much did that cost to find out

Had? Past tense? I think you'll find this shit is very much ongoing with no end in sight for our mental wellbeing.

EndUKLockdownBS . BBC funded by Bill Gates - bought and paid for COVID-19 hoax. Shame

Someone actually got paid to research this, and then a group of people got paid to turn that into a news statement. This isn't news - this was blindingly obvious to anyone with a pulse! Tell us something we DON'T know, BBC News!

What percentage of suicides is the BBC responsible for? 50% is probably a low ball.

You don't say! Bloody hell don't need research project to know that. Which muppets came up with that bit of research 🤯 🤔 🙈

no shit....

Really? Wow what a surprise this is!

It should read 'is having...' We ain't seen the half of the impact yet.

But you choose to ignore all the evidence from the start about Covid, and instead push Gov propaganda. You're as guilty as them...

No shit sherlock 🙁🙄

Only now.

The Year of Disguises via aier

Not being able to go out and do everything they used to do had a major impact on people's mental health? Do you reckon?

No shit Sherlock!!! So what can the solution be?!? Oh I know!!! Let’s have more lockdowns, that’ll please everybody!

It did, I am much happier

EndUKLockdown1 Der you don't say BBC pedophile protectors and lying scumbags the lot of them

Was it just the lockdown? Or possibly the way the various stories had been reported. The media love to put the fear into people. They’re there to inform, with accurate facts. Unfortunately most was biased & half truths. You could see from the start how it would effect wellbeing

No shit Sherlock! And it’s not just the Lockdown that has had an impact. The constant negativity and perpetuation of bad news by the media causing depression and division in this country is despicable. Oh for some positivity and more of what unites us than divides us!

You think 🙄

No shit Sherlock 🕵️‍♂️

No, I’m shocked. 🙄

Government don't care though do they.

Tier 2 lockdown rules in England: latest Covid restrictions explainedCoronavirus ‘high alert’ warning covers the north-east, parts of the Midlands, London, York and most of Essex among other areas The new normal, in which Boris J dictates how many people you can interact with, is dystopian. Am I the only one who is genuinely far more worried about government overreach than COVID-19 (a disease with a 99.5%+ recovery rate)? The UK is no longer a free country. God help you guys What exactly does this mean: indoor exercise classes only 'if it is possible for people to avoid mixing with those they do not live with'? Anyone? Mixing = stand 2m? In same room? If means cannot mix in same room, why not just only one household in class?
