Hospitals in England could become "overwhelmed" with Covid cases if MPs do not back new restrictions, Cabinet Office minister Michael Gove has said.Mr Gove said MPs - who will vote on the measures next week - need to "take responsibility for difficult decisions".It has warned, however, that areas in tier three will be stretched to "breaking point" without further financial support from the Treasury.
Some MPs say the new system imposes tight restrictions on numerous areas with low cases, and are calling instead for a more localised approach. "The tiers we had in place before the lockdown had not suppressed [Covid] sufficiently: they were neither strong enough to reduce social contact sufficiently, nor applied widely enough to contain the virus's spread," he wrote.

My colleagues within the ambulance service are overstretched and doing an amazing job. As their chaplain and as so close to the local hospital, I am thinking of doing take away food and drink for the crews to help them.

The NHS is always overwhelmed in Winter!! Operations are cancelled. This isn’t new! Most people in hospitals now are being treated for other illnesses and have tested covid positive on admission (asymptotic) Turn up with a broken leg & test positive you are then a covid patient!
Do people have short memories...it’s an annual thing..doing well this year as normally patients are on beds lining hospital corridors!

Essentially it’s about health and economy and saving that but the government have overlooked mental health, mine is at an all time low, I think the government should reconsider the tiers, or reconsider the rule of six make it a rule of 4 and allow people to mix within reason

The tier system is not linked to hospital region though. If I got hospitalised, I would be admitted to a hospital that is in a different tier. Therefore, the control doesn’t fit the objective.
They have yet to be overwhelmed, this is scare tactics by the media and the government alike, this is now just a virus like influenza it acts the same, anyone with any common sense knows this yes it kills so does influenza

Every year the NHS gets overwhelmed by Flu cases. We have an aging population, don't pay enough for nurses, so are always short staffed & have to steal nurses from 3rd world countries. Locking the UK down & destroying livelihoods can't be the solution to a perennial problem.
Is this more to do with quelling public outrage from the govt wasting 22bn on covid contracts than to do with the stability of the NHS?
