Last week, I started crying for no apparent reason while I was making lunch. I was running on fumes and was wondering how I was going to finish an assignment that was due in a few days; my five-year-old son was demanding, rather loudly, a “jelly spoon”; and his seven-year-old sister was dancing on a dining room chair to her favourite song, “Unstoppable” by China Anne McClain. It’s a really catchy song, and I’ll admit it, I often sang along to it enthusiastically.
The last few months have been uniquely challenging for everyone, but for parents trying to teach their angels through distanced learning as well as hold down a full-time job, they’ve been something of a pressure cooker. Schools in Los Angeles, where I live, started their summer holidays in June. I recall feeling a mixture of relief that I didn’t have to coax and cajole my daughter into finishing her schoolwork, and dread at the idea of having no structure to her days.
There is more, though. My son is becoming more frustrated and anxious. On more than one occasion he has freaked out about leaving the house; he doesn’t want to wear a mask, but he doesn’t want “the Corona Virus” to get him, either. He knows he is safe at home, but the outside world presents too many threats to his health.
