Schools should have a simple uniform 'without all the extra bits' to help save money for parents, according to the chair of the body representing Catholic schools

Some schools are using branded sportswear as part of their compulsory PE and games kits

He is the chair of both the Council for Catholic Maintained Schools and Catholic Schools' Trustee Service. At the weekend, Children's Commissioner Koulla Yiasouma saidShe said she was "fed up" waiting for schools to take action over rising costs. "It adds to the worry and the anxiety that families are experiencing at the moment and it is only going to get worse."Bishop McKeown told BBC Radio Foyle there was a "tsunami of extra expenditure" coming.

"He needs three different PE kits for different activities. They play cricket, they play rugby, they do athletics," she said. "Stand there for hours, they can put whatever price they want on it because they have to have it," she said. A spokesperson for the Department of Education said the minister had been very clear that she understood the challenges that families were currently having to address in relation to the cost of living, "including the pressures associated with school uniform costs at this time of year".

This uniform business is analogous to primary teachers charging £40 - £50 for coaching for a transfer test based on the numeracy and literacy curriculum. Parents moan & groan but do nothing to change the system. They could start with the CMAgovUK site instead of compliance.

Some CC Primary Schools have already changed to a PE uniform my youngest daughters school.

Also certain primary schools requiring 2 uniforms. You would swear they were post primary instead. Kids far happier in Pe uniform

Sell My Uniform is playing their part by enabling parents to sell on unused school uniform items for Grammar/High schools in NI. Parents are able to buy good condition uniform items at affordable prices and the parents who are selling get a little reimbursement as well. Win Win

Well then he should look at all the ccms primary schools asking parents to buy oneills branded p.e. uniforms to wear once a week

Universal free school meals needed urgently. Working poor parents are struggling. We can’t claim expenses for food unlike niexecutive hungry kids never reach their potential moneillsf MMcIlveenDUP step up

If your school blazer is black, you can buy the crest separately and attach it to a generic black blazer instead of spending £80

With more and more families stressed on food, heating poverty it might be wise for school governors to look to an effective, functional, inexpensive uniform that will keep their students warm. Fleeces instead of blazers, track suits instead of skirts/trousers etc.

Grammar Schools are a complete racket this is a deliberate policy to maintain elitism

The PE kit is highly unreasoble. The rest, the blazer is worn every weekday, trousers shirt etc. is daily clothing for kids.

I can’t understand how schools can justify the price of a school blazer at £80 when shops like Primark can sell blazers for £15.
