Just 10 days after the new Omicron variant hits the headlines, a company has started making a brand new vaccine specifically targeting it with the backing of CEPI/COVAX.
CEPI chief executive Richard Hatchett said:"There is no time to lose, so I'm pleased that within 10 days of Omicron being declared a Variant of Concern by the WHO, CEPI is expanding its partnership with Gritstone to support a new Omicron vaccine candidate which can be made globally accessible through COVAX."The early indications are that the Omicron variant of coronavirus is more transmissible than Delta, the prime minister has said.
The two companies say the vaccine's overall efficacy rate against all variants is 71%, except Omicron, which was not in circulation when the study was underway. Medicago is set to seek regulatory approval for the world's first plant-based COVID-19 vaccine from Health Canada as part of its rolling submission. Carol and Ronnie Furman have to quarantine in a small room without a fridge after returning from South Africa.Mrs Furman said their"exorbitant" quarantine hotel room came at a"financially crippling" cost of £3,750, and it has been"the most harrowing and stressful experience ever".
She confirmed people would still be called in priority order of age and vulnerability, but said it is really important people come forward when contacted to"extend their protection".
