Coronavirus: Home-schooling has been hell, say parents

"He is too young to have the motivation and self-discipline to work independently, especially during lockdown when he is isolated from other kids, his emotions are all over the place and he's getting hardly any exercise.

"My eldest became frequently angry and aggressive, my youngest sad and withdrawn, and the relationship between them strained. "Each child has received a call from their teacher - but this is only because I have been in touch to explain how much they are struggling with not being in school," said one parent.

"From what I have heard and read, nothing could be further from the truth - most parents are just too exhausted to think about what they could do to get their voice heard."

Yeah I bet no one is so quick to want to shift to kids starting at 7 now eh

Time to start appreciating and supporting teachers instead of treating them like surrogate parents while both parents work to pay for the fancy house and the BMWs.

Sorry but what a lot of crap.most parents ive spoken to which is a lot as I'm a supermarket cashier most of them haven't even bothered or don't have time, yet their furloughed.theres no excuse there's books, apps, online help & advice.

Maybe some of the parents will realise what little shits they’ve produced and understand what the teachers have to put up with.

The reality of teaching a child or 2 has hit some parents. Now try and realise what it’s like to teach a class of 30 with differing needs and you are still no where near to understanding how difficult it is 🤷🏻‍♂️

Mmmhmm.

Home schooling and acting as a school replacement aren't the same thing.

Especially for the workers expected to do a full day of work

Poor things. And they don’t have to deal with long, medium & short term planning, resources, targets, data and results, differentiation, literacy, numeracy, SEND, marking, feedback, safeguarding, CP, OFSTED and a host of other policies. That’s before you even START on behaviour!

Uh no it hasn’t. It’s been great and very productive. My 3 have learnt more at home then they ever could of at school. It’s like anything you get out what you put in.

Not at all. Which parents exactly? Mine have taken too it like a duck to water. Flourished in fact. Loved having them home. Made us far stronger as a family.

I sympathise to an extent, but if a teacher can juggle thirty kids, with varying ability lessons, doing differentiated work, managing varying behaviours an ASN issues, then having to deal with two kids and work from home is possible - surely?

Superficially those who value education the most seem to be affected the most affected at this time, trying to both teach and work. Ironically it is the children of those who don’t who will be most affected long term. It’s not about not wanting the take responsibility...

It has been difficult for parents, but much more important what for the poor kids who have missed being with friends etc, some with rotten unfit parents and home lives!! Schools should have closed early and for a month Max! This should be about the kids, NOT the adults!

Jesus there is some morbid horrible comments on this post

Even as students it has been hell

Wouldnt say it’s been hell. Been a bit challenging.

My son and his school have done the best they could after We all got dropped into this shit storm. School has tried to keep things going but you can tell they just weren’t geared up for the overnight action they were required to take. 10/10 for effort all round

Not a parent? Then please stfu. Thank you.

It has been. Still is.

Parents reduced to tears over the strain of having to be parents.

Keir Starmer was happy, his were at school all the time. One rule for the workers, one for socialist elite.

Maybe stop having so many damned children? Offloading your parenting duties to others then complaining when you have to tolerate the little monsters at home continuously is a woeful state of affairs. Take responsibility for what you created

Hats of to the teachers because I’ve found this home schooling very overwhelming!

Why no e-learning/ video learning been arranged like in other countries

How did the human race survive all these years?

FFS get a life you freaks.... fighting on the beaches for freedom can be compared to hell..

Now you know what it’s like to teach😤😤

I've found HomeSchooling really hard. I have cried. Obviously it's because I am lazy and entitled, hate being with my son and never appreciated teachers so that'll teach me! Anyone left on Twitter with any empathy at all? ItsOKNotToBeOK

Pathetic!

As a teacher myself, I would like to confirm that a class of Year 6 is easier thazn getting own to do anything. Hats off yo those wdho do it all the time, I don't think I could!

1/ It simply hasn’t really happened in my house. Two teenagers with work set online and on different platforms, is hard to keep track of. One teacher phoned to say my eldest had skipped 7 homework’s. How did she let it get to 7 before letting us know. I do take responsibility...

How to home school

KESellgren One point to note - NI also going for (or accepting) blended learning model in Sept. unlike Eng, Scotland & Ireland. Hugely disappointing. I've yet to hear of one NI school planning to open full-time

Home schooling or being parent for longer then weekend 🤔🤔🤔

Really don’t understand why the summer holiday can’t be reduced by 2 weeks and the Xmas holiday by 1 week

Having kids at home and controlling not home schooling . A good wake up for some parents that their little angels are a pain in the neck.

It appears to me there is an assumption that those who have struggled with homeschooling are the same group who are irresponsible parents who berate teachers. This logic does not make sense. The mental health impact should be looked at seriously, not mocked.

It's true. This is against the nature of the child.

Now you know its not the schools fault.

As a single parent of now 9yr old I have struggled at times with home schooling, both even had some tears but overall we have enjoyed learning together and I feel I am now in a much better position to help him in the future..

Well we teaching staff have been working out socks off to do what we can. Also this may also show parents how hard it is for us as well. Where’s the empathy?

Time to create new Govt Funded Jobs HomeTutors

I wait for a research on the impact it had on kids, I expect the lack of socialization to have some effect on their mental health.

Just don’t dare set any summer holiday homework! The kids and parents have had enough and we all need a break 🥱

Why take so much load.. actually for most children it is school (who also are not accustomed to it) trying to push their 'syllabus' . For most kids it could have been light fun filled DYI activities rather that teacher on VC explaining things on black boards

First world problems, if you think that homeschooling was 'hell' then you have a very easy life A parents 'hell' is seeing your child on a ventilator, or far worse than that in a coffin

Yep, it's been pretty grim. We're all fed up with each other. Kids miss their friends and are under stimulated.

Hopefully the parents remember this, and treat teachers, teacher aides etc with more courtesy. You know realise how much work goes into being a teachet

Well maybe now you’ll consider paying teachers what they’re worth!

Perhaps it’s more about having to look after their children. Maybe now they should value how teachers handle 30 in a class, manage to teach & finally understand why teachers need holidays.

I feel our education system has really let these young parents down. If this is their definition of 'hell' they have obviously not been taught very well at all.

Well be a decent parent and raise your child properly. That way you won't pass on the issue to poor teachers!

Interesting article, but only a sample size of 250

I am a teacher (also a parent) and I do sympathise. There is no substitute for school. The routine, the school buildings, the teaching professionals and probably most importantly the social interaction. Must be hard for parents.

I can't help but find this a bit funny, people nowadays feel entitled to forget about their responsibility towards the kids and leave everything to the schools And now they're all upset they have to actually deal with their kids

Fancy interviewing the majority? Who have likely said “it’s been tough, sure, but I do enjoy the extra time with my kid(s) as I know it won’t be like this forever.” Or does that not make a good enough story? Need some fuel to the fire?

What, their own children, that they decided to give birth too and take responsibility for... WOW!

Yes - that's shows how damaging the lockdown has been on many levels. And what will these parents feel like when they announce another lockdown around October?

Twitter with limited space not place for for topic

Kids need to be home schooled for the next 2 years at least

I said as 'lockdown' started that there would be an increase in physical and mental health problems. The long-term damage and increased mortality as a result of the lockdown will make the virus look like a picnic.

😂😂😂

Home schooling is easy, I've done it for 7 years now, it's actually quite fun and brings you closer to your kids as you tend to share more stuff together, where as normally they would come in from school, have their tea and plonk in front of the telly.

Parents have no power, teachers have no power- the lefty idiots have made a laughing stock of education.

I wouldn’t teach in the UK- incentives or not, Sounds fuking awful.

Yeah yeah stop complaining about your kids and raise them properly with tlc

Now parents should understand why good teachers are in such short supply.

Walking a mile in the shoes of a teacher should have put a few people straight about how much they really do. A good teacher is worth every penny, and then some.

Maybe try to educate your children and teach them to behave and respect... 🤷

how can mum works from home when kids r yelling n hungry demanding lunches? best if they can care the kids full time

I have homeschooled and I think it is much easier than distance learning in my opinion.

Well I’m sure home schooling your kids is better than watching them die on a ventilator, just sayin’.

i have been looking after a pair of parents who can read but they can't write very well they found me to help them teach their kids. Which I have done gladly, it is only hell because you don't reach out for help

Home schooling? Or just having your children at home?

Treat and pay teachers better!!!!!

'Coronavirus: Home-schooling has been hell, say [[people who haven't had a tube forced down their throats and their chemically paralyzed lungs forcibly ventilated for weeks and months without stopping]]'...

This'll do wonders for teacher recruitment.

now you know how hard its for a teacher!

Lord have mercy on us

Nah. If you were in hell, you'd be dead. These people are alive, maybe in part due to home-schooling.

Actual home education is significantly different to lockdown education 🤦‍♂️

Maybe they’ll have more understanding of and sympathy for teachers, now.

u shouldn't have had children then

interesting

UK coronavirus live: No 10 fails to apologise for Boris Johnson's care home remarks amid criticismCharity boss says blaming care sector for repeated government mistakes is unacceptable He has sunk to trump levels of incompetence. Shameful. Why would they apologise? They haven’t grasped the fact that any of the current situation is their fault. It’s the NHS, care homes, the people, China, probably even children’s fault. Anyone but theirs. When some care homes charge very high prices, they should take full responsibility for their residents.
