Coronavirus: England's face mask law could backfire, says EU expert

A new law making it mandatory to wear a face mask in shops and supermarkets in England could backfire, a leading official in the EU’s agency for disease control has warned, after police officers said it would be unenforceable.

govuk MattHancock could push this by fully endorsing face coverings in workplaces, as a mitigation/control measure for transmission of Covid19 in the work place, In the COVID-19 secure guidance for employers, Companies would then adopt the measure in their risk assessment.

Persuasion doesn’t work. Mask wearing had been advised months ago and no one uses them. Make them mandatory as well as education about the benefits. At the end of April up to 84% of Italians were wearing masks even though it’s not the cultural norm. People will get used to it.

It takes both. Most laws are pretty much unenforceable if everyone decided to ignore them so you persuade the majority its the right thing to do and use the law to persuade those that still won't do it.

The province of British Columbia is one of the few places with statistically zero coronavirus. 14 currently hospitalized/189 dead out of a population of 5 million. It achieved this by specifically not forcing people to wear masks or congregate. It was recommended not punished.

Or the majority of the population is actually fine with some common sense in places where it is really needed...

Observation. EU and expert really dont go together unless you are being sarcastic.
