Jeremy Corbyn faces battle with Labour members over Brexit policy

Members at the party's annual conference will choose between backing Remain or staying neutral.

It comes amid calls for the party to back remaining in the European Union, including by a number of Labour MPs such as shadow foreign secretary Emily Thornberry.Late on Sunday, attempts to find a consensus during a behind-closed-doors"compositing" meeting failed to agree on words for a single Brexit motion.

As a result, members will debate two separate motions on Monday. One would commit the party to campaigning "energetically" to remain in the EU during an expected snap election. The other - closer to Mr Corbyn's position - would see the party remaining officially neutral and only taking sides ahead of a subsequent referendum.

A statement by Labour's ruling National Executive Committee (NEC) said the party should only decide how to campaign in a referendum at a special conference held after a general election. The BBC's political correspondent Iain Watson said the Remain position"will almost certainly need some trade union support to pass". Unions control half of the votes at the Labour conference.

'A step forward'Andrew Lewin, of Remain Labour, said the prospect of alternatives being put to a vote was"a huge step forward"."Labour members will tomorrow have the chance to change party policy - so Labour commits to campaign to Remain in all circumstances," he said.

Michael Chessum, of left-leaning group Another Europe, told the BBC that Monday's vote was not just about Brexit."It's about where Mr Corbyn and the unions are really willing to listen to party members," he said.Media playback is unsupported on your device

i like labours plan-it as a chance of bringing about a way to unity-not perfect but is as possibilities-ruling out people vote is wrong. well it is if you believe in democracy. Seem to have missed this on the BBC during the Liberal Democrats conference. Hopefully, BBCPolitics won't be editing out the interesting bits of this weeks saga. UKLabour Liebour isn't working🤡🌏🆘 It seems that Labour have a choice either to vote for remain or vote for a proposed negotiation for a Brexit deal which isn't really Brexit.

Alternatively, the Labour conference will hold a grown up debate and then vote on a policy to take forward. I.may have to vote lib dem for the first time ever. I don't want to but they leave me no choice Prepare for government! The party of Clement Attlee has lost its soul. Instead, it hides from real scrutiny over a shambolic Brexit policy, saying it would do a deal with the E.U. which it would then fight against at a GE. Meanwhile Antisemitism and Marxism now define Labour

no no no .... the Labour Party are going to debate the Brexit policy and then vote on it. OK? Aah Corbyn’s attitude over brexit seems not to be for the people but rather for the EU forces. Mr Corbyn. All I say from Africa is wake up Britain has done nothing constructive in the last 2 years just focusing on Brexit EU has got your economy exactly where it wants

Labour Party should have two deputy leaders, Corbyn saysThe words come after an attempt to scrap deputy leader Tom Watson's position on the first day of the party conference. Corbyn should listen to his advisers, what leader in their right mind would choose their 80 remain constituencies over his 148 leave ones? It’s madness..... Another referendum is remain. They should try and get a leader first... Does he have a cunning plan ?
