Reaction to the idea on social media has been mixed. Here's what doctors and pharmacists have to say.

Helga Mangion of the National Pharmacy Association says community pharmacists are "easily accessible expert health professionals".

But Laura Buckley, a pharmacist in the East Riding of Yorkshire and a member of the Primary Care Pharmacy Association, says pharmacists would "make sure the patient understands any side effects that might crop up". "The pills have a long history of safety and any monitoring that needed to be done could be done in the pharmacy, or if absolutely necessary, if they were concerned about anything, could be referred back to a GP."Pharmacist Laura Buckley thinks it would be a "positive" thing if more contraceptives were considered for sale in pharmacies.Laura says pharmacists can discuss concerns with patients in private consultation rooms without the need for pre-booked appointments.

"I would advise, actually, when you're first starting contraception to speak with your doctor or your healthcare professional, or the pharmacist - and then you can find out what's best for you," she says.

Yes!!! If viagra can be sold OTC - it having more side effects and is a more dangerous drug than the POP - then YES!!! Stop trying to control women’s reproductive health and allow us to manage it ourselves!!!

TheSexDoctorUK Yes, yes, yes. It’s a safe drug that prevents pregnancy. Let’s take down the barriers that prevent women accessing it.

and watch unwanted pregnancies rocket as the poorest cant afford it.

Please read the article properly 1 The pills in question are progesterone only, do not need the same checks as combined pills 2 All contraception is free in the UK - with a prescription

No way. Too many possible dangerous side effects that need to be discussed with patient’s doctor/prescriber before commencing. Follow up BP/weight/side effect symptom checks that need to be monitored throughout treatment

Yes of course. As long as the pharmacist has access to the patients medical records so they can provide a safe pill for them. Would be so much more accessible for so many people.

Contraception is already free in the UK, how can people not know this?

No contraception is free.

It should be sold over the counter and if any female over a specific age wants to buy and use it then have at it, its no one's business but the female's

No

No, ever wondered why it’s a nightmare getting rates of breast and cervical cancer pre 1960?

NO! A doctor must keep an eye on the person prescribed these, I had a stroke because of the pill!

No , of course not. 85 year old White ,Christian evangelicals should remain in charge . They know best.

Yes

There is a debate from both sides... and if I answer and others don’t agree I will get “jumped on” for having an opinion. But no.

Yes. It’s called choice. Get it free on prescription or pay for it with no prescription. Pharmacists will advise about side effects.

Absolutely 100% and be free as it is on script.

How will they stop underage children getting hold of it?

Not in the supermarket but by the pharmacist why not? They can screen patients.

Why when it’s already free?

No it shouldn’t. Every pill is different and so we are too. Blood pressure needs checking, blood clots, cancer in your family and so on. Are family planning clinics a joke, they are not and this is stupid!

Yes. It's long been known that the pill makes girls less frigid which is a good thing for everyone

Have it dispensed cost free by pharmacists only after an initial consultation with GPs. Health checks ,blood pressure weight etc can be performed by pharmacists every few months to dispense repeat prescriptions with GP reviews yearly.this will free up GPs & be easier for women.

There's no such thing as a free hump!

Should be given away in schools so that the youth of today do not become a burden on society with unwanted children.

Not sold, no.

Yes it should be

The pill is free on prescription so what's the actual hardship in getting a prescription? I'm on it, consultation done over the phone due to covid, are some GPs refusing to issue prescriptions or something?

Who writes this BS !!?

*waits for the anti pill womb wreckers to partake in how wrong this is 🙄🤚 I think it's time we moved forward and made it accessible to all women who choose to have it 👍 Liberal equal choice and convenience.

It would save Drs time and ear ache !

Do they not still do blood pressure checks? When I was on it I remember every 6 months or so I had to have blood pressure checked and a quick chat with GP to get my prescription.

I see no reason why it shouldn’t be , I mean you can Viagra over the counter so 🤷🏻‍♂️

No. Too many risks to a woman’s health.

Free? 100% yes (which it is already in the U.K.), sold over the counter? Absolutely not. The side effects from whatever variant of the pill a woman takes can be extremely dangerous & it should only be given after a consultation.

Yes.

Why not? If our current changes to contraceptive coverage is accessibility then put them off from the over the counter drugs is a menace most especially tonthe LMICs

Yes. Sure! I want to be able to chose the brand and how many I want to take.

Yes. Women deserve the right to choose what happens to their body. Why should the pill be restricted when other drugs are available this way? If sold by a pharmacist it would be via medical consultation. I will be completing the public consultation form later with my views.

No..it sends the wrong message..but there is a fine line in police state and personal responsibility

Um, yes.

Maybe by camelback

The pill increases your risk of breast cancer. It has a host of other risks and side effects.

If it is not sold over the counter it will be sold under the counter because activities that require its use are constant.

Say it with me, slowly: all contraception should be free.

Do you know that Japanese women cannot buy the pill freely? Japan is still a country of outdated male sovereignty. Japanese women are in many ways oppressed and controlled by Japanese men.

Contraception is free in the UK. So no it shouldn’t be sold OTC. Should it be made more easily available..maybe following consultation with a pharmacist.

It’s not a good idea. Women who suffers from migrane are in danger of having a stroke therefore, they must get it from a doctor who can prescribe the correct type of contraceptives.

Sure

Sold It’s free

Can you be brave and talk about Hunter Biden’s laptop?

It’s free in Scotland

No

meantime this is how they discuss racism in Portugal Lusa_noticias rtppt one black person with lots of interruption as he was trying to speak.

Yes

Given the hassle I had with it I disagree. Some women have bad side effects and it has to be taken spot on to be effective. It can even stop your periods too leading many to not realize if they do fall pregnant by accident. Speaking from experience it should be prescribed

It's poison that kills the creative energy and causes so many illnesses including cancers; it should be BANNED

Yes

The pill should be given away. For free. This is ridiculous.

Yes. Condoms are so why not the oppppppps pill

Aye, so we can shag like maniacs, worry free.

yes and no 1 it would be easier for girls /women to get them but you would still need to see a Dr/nurse for health checks . some things just can't be done over the counter

Why not? Can you OD on it?

Yeh, starting about 20 yrs ago, shocked to know it's not already!

After lockdown finishes they will need to be given to teens like smarties

Free yes but proven they have been to a doctor, every pill is different. Its not like a cold medicine

Yes. And free.

No.

The BBC were advocating for abortions at home so no doubt they'd be up for this and to hell with the consequences. DefundTheBBC

Absolutely NOT

Yes. And the morning after pill as well

irresponsible behaviour should be banned.

Why not? It’s better to be safe & it needs to be accessible.

Isn't there a risk however slight of strokes and stuff? In principal selling the pill over the counter seems a good idea

Of course!

In UK it is free and always has been. Its part of the NHS. Its a controlled for a reason via GPs

Without a doubt. They shouldn’t tax any kind of protection for women full stop as it’s a necessity for some. The same goes to women’s sanitary protection , stop taxing ! Start looking at what’s essential and what isn’t to tax !

Yes

it just goes to prove that people only read the headline and not the story. Contraception is free on NHS, so why would anyone pay for it. And also, women can develop deadly thrombosis, so checks are essential by GP every year.

I’m in Wales so we don’t pay for our prescriptions, do you have to pay the prescription charge for the pill in England?

Why not.

Creeping privatisation of the NHS. Contraception should remain free.

They give out johnnies for free so I don’t see why not

Absolutely. They've been sold OTC in places all over the world for decades. I was paying $35 per pack while they were being sold OTC for .35 cents in Hong Kong. Money, baby.

... yes

I’ve bought it from LloydsPharmacy for a long time now. Because trying to get a Drs appt before a pandemic was hard enough. It would be awesome if it was free, but it’s not and babies, they come free, but cost way more in the grand scheme of things.

I was guna ask why it's not free yet, but we all know the answer.

No need now we have the gates jab! 😂 😂

Obviously

This should be free to all the women around the world but the problem is the government wants to capitalize on it which is disgusting. I'm fine with paying more tax if it helps people with their health.

What kind of backward country... Isn't it already sold OTC? 👀

Yes

Yes

Recently my friend's baby was diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia & needs a stem cell transplant. Jason & his wife are first-time parents caring for a sick baby & could use some help. If you are in a place to donate or share, it would be appreciated.

They should probably put it in the water. Like fluoride.

Yes. Next question.

Yep

Just makes sense.

good luck

It should be free

Yes
