The chancellor has warned there is hardship ahead for many people as the furlough scheme winds down over the next few months

since the UK lockdown began on 23 March, according to figures recorded by Sky News.

"This is what we need to do now, it's to look forward, provide the opportunities for tomorrow. Yes, there is hardship ahead for many people, we know that, but they shouldn't be left without hope."Sky's business presenter Ian King said the chancellor's words on the furlough scheme were not surprising, describing the"damage done to the public finances" as"far in excess of anything we saw in the aftermath of the financial crisis".

What Furlough, I'm a small limited company and I've had to survive on zero income since March

Without being unkind, the prediction of hardship for millions of families, by the Eton educated husband of a woman who is heiress to billions does ring rather hollow on the empathy front. The fact that he is fully aware of the multiplier effect of Brexit in Jan is awful.

Everyone is going to be in debt and will be struggling to pay bills, I fear many will file for bankruptcy.

He is an intelligent man, and well educated, so he knows that Conservatives will be held responsible by millions of families for their misery. Long term unemployment, and the attendant loss of homes, health and happiness for families will not be forgiven. brexit beckons.

I doubt the rich will suffer much just the people who are already near to poverty
