The National Farmers’ Union has criticised stars such as Joaquin Phoenix who use their celebrity to promote veganism, claiming the growth in meat-free living is fuelling a rise in mental health problems among British farmers.

Farmers who grow vegetables are affecting the mental health of meat producers!

This is fantastic news.

Pretty sure that killing and abusing animals is more damaging to a farmer's mental health than an Oscar's speech.

The mental health of those who enslave, exploit, force breed, mutilate, separate families of, & send sentient individuals of ANY species to be murdered has ALREADY PROVED themselves to be damaged

Am I being dense here? Market demands change all the time and producers react accordingly. If demand for meat comes down and veg goes up, surely the answer is to switch to growing veg?

Another small step for vegankind

Who grows the food that vegans eat I wonder. Could it be farmers? A subset of farmers who profit from selling the bodies and secretions of animals are whining about people learning what the real cost is. Easy solution is to change supply to meet changing demands...basic business.

Well toilets, we meet again. Now u r finally losing. rekt. Tick, tock... dairy.com

'Celebrities promoting an end to fossil fuels damage coalworkers' mental health.'

Historically industries have come and gone, the time for mass breeding and slaughter to end has come. Farmers, heed the warning, end the cruelty and environmental destruction you are causing. Diversify into plants or other methods of income before its too late.

Ich musste mich jetzt wirklich versichern, dass das nicht ein Artikel eines Satire-Magazins ist! Hallo?

Guilt tripping farmer's union uses vegans as scapegoats again... Cool, it's a day ending in a Y after all

🤣🤣and they call us the snowflakes! It's not just celebrities that promote veganism. All vegans promote it. No difference to any other business as consumer tastes change over time. What makes them deserving of special attention & support? Diversify now. Clock is ticking ticktock

Is it so hard to grow barley 😶😶

Enormous damage? I show you damage! More than 150 billion animals are slaughtered every year! : GoVegan

Oh ffs. 🙄

pretty sure animal farmers are damaging their own mental health by being murderers...cognitive dissonance is a hell of a drug, kids

Don’t farmers grow non meat food?

Ludicrous. Plant-based eating is becoming more popular over time, not over night. Farmers have lots of time to transition. Smaller/local farms are free-range/grass-fed more often making them more attractive to meat eaters. Still a problem? Blame subsidies to big animal husbandry.

I'm pretty sure that's the oxy…

Celebrities are usually wrong about things but anything that helps animals is fine by me.

Haha. What about the animals losing their lives? How's their mental health? Poor innocent animals born to be put on a plate. Abhorrent.

Ha ha. What a croc of shite!

We should be more worried about the mental health of oil and coal executives, they must be having a terrible time at the moment.

Weird. I thought the vegans were supposed to be the snowflakes?

Boo fucking hoo GoVegan

Grow plant crops

Ah

It's ok to make decisions for your own diet but stop trying to influence others.

Oh well.

Change is never easy but it is necessary.

We’ve hit peak Guardian

I don’t believe this. It’s BS.

If you want to be vegan - be vegan. Stop trying to ram your lifestyle choices down other peoples throats. Liable to lose a hand or more.....

I want to kill my cows, but the guy who played Joker said cows have feelings, and now I need a psychiatrist. I will now sue the guy who played Commodus in Gladiator (even tho I love that movie).

But slaughterhouse workers 'There’s a Christmas crisis going on: no one wants to kill your dinner' People don’t want to work in abattoirs any more. The industry is linked to psychological and physical damage

Their narcissism blinds them from considering unintended consequences

People who grow vegetables are farmers too! It's bizarre that we never hear them bitching and moaning about the meat eaters.

😂🤣😄 It's infuriating when the targets of woke speech turn said speech on wokists, isn't It?

Name another industry where customers not buying your products is their fault and not yours. In the words of Bear Grylls: “Improvise, adapt, overcome”

'In their behavior towards creatures, ALL MEN ARE NAZIS. HUMAN BEINGS SEE OPPRESSION VIVIDLY WHEN THEY'RE THE VICTIMS. OTHERWISE THEY VICTIMIZE BLINDLY AND WITHOUT A THOUGHT.' - Isaac Bashevis Singer, 1978 Nobel Laureate

spare us.....animal agriculture is destroying the environment, tens of billions of animals per year, and could well cause the next BIG coronavirus pandemic. Anything writing this **** should be ashamed of themselves. It's disgusting.

Do you know what will harm their mental health? Dying.

Maybe they can outsource their cow farts to Trump’s Space Force propulsion team or send it to Elon - he’ll do something with it.

The farming industry is polluting the rivers and the seas... we need to change it

Surely Brexit, and the lowering of health standards to allow for cheap American imports are far more damaging than a couple of vegans.

Don't. Farmers. Grow. Plants.....🤔

fuck the farmers! AnimalRights

Nice divisive story yet agsin

I hate to state the super obvious, but don’t farmers grow plants?

Monocultures are terrible for the environment and carbon emission - we can't rely solely on plants

The same farmers who keep voting in climate change deniers?..I have zero sympathy for these idiots

Let's not stop using fossil fuels too; think of the people who'll have to look for another job. It's unfortunate about farmers investing in something that turned out not to be sustainable, but our health, as well as that of the 🌎 is more important.

Anyone who eats yogurt supports veal production.

Ooh boo hoo.

Pathetic free-loading celebrities.

Farmers also grow a lot of veggies.

They're also, usually, monumental bellends.

🙄

How dare they question Phoenix, the man brave enough to wear the same tux for a whole awards season to show his commitment to sustainability

LMAOOOO

😂😂

Beige29 Farmers don't visit the cinema, have televisions, or read celebrity magazines.

Most of Farming done mechanically by big cotporations

Celebrities are so easy to speak one way but do another. So most don't listen to them. So I doubt one guy made anyone hurt a whole bunch of farmers. If he likes to drink nut juice then let him while he is wearing a silk tie and a cotton shirt and wool based suit. Most don't vote

They must change and adapt like everyone else has to.

That’s ridiculous

Not my concern. Sorry - only interested in animal welfare, and environmental safeguarding.

No one really listens to people who wear silk ties and cotton suits or wool or leather. If they lived what they preached maybe they wouldn't drink wine either and veggies do need some animal waste to grow they don't grow just in mud. btw dont make your dogs vegan or cats

Farmers who don't grow vegetables or crops?

A vegan diet is NOT healthy. It can cause anaemia and eating disorders.

Grow veggies for mental health

The oxymoronic insanity is strong with this one...

Then farmers need to grow vegetables

Newspapers confusing gastronomic origins is bumming out Peruvian diplomats. You all stink- worse than Chilean ceviche:

Tell them to plant more vegetables then

Promoting free speech and consent 'damages' the mental health of the 'woke' and statists.

oh ok then let the planet rot so farmers can rot in it as well.

LMAO

Not everything is a black or white issue. The farming industry needs to be tackled absolutely, but we shouldn't be so quick to dismiss the stress farmer's are under, job security all else considered.

Farmers know they can grow plants, right?

Ahhhh! How very saddening it is. Boo-hoo. Weren't their mental health damaged when they were slaughtering animals for profit? No? Strange...😒

Torturing animals might affect their mental health too.

Really? How? In case the farmers didn't know: Vegans eat stuff. Vegetables, cereal, beans, legumes, nuts, seeds... usually we buy these things from farmers. We are your customers, not your enemies.

Vegans are bullies!

Do they advocate the wholesale slaughter of farm animals? If so, what do they propose to use to improve soils?

Hahahaha...

kinda the point actually.

If farmers are so terrified of the meterotic rise of plant based diets ruining their lives they could, and I'm just spit-balling here, but they could, farm plants, non?

Snowflake farmers ?

pretty sure farmers don't really care about damaging mental health of other living creatures, so...

Right, cuz that makes sense. Surely their mental health should be affected by the fact they *farm* animals, raise them, feed them up & then kill them for money?

It’s really down to personal choice freewill

No attribution. Quote positioned so headline reads like a single statement. Seriously classy editorial standards.

Farmers breed abuse & sell animals for slaughter, what kind of mental state does it take to do that for a living?

Uh what?

hahaha 😂😂😂😂😂🙏😂 staph pls

And the farmers literally kill animals. Boo hoo.

Lol ok

I doubt the number of people who are vegan will have any impact on their business

Poor farmers cannot torture animals in peace 😭😭

Really?

Let them sue in Civil Court, if it is not simply an attempt to scare Vegans into silence. I do not think truth can be claimed to be injurious to an economic interest where it does not breach any standard of care that slaughterous farmers will somehow be considered susceptible to.

Lol.

The vegan paradox: going plant-based may be good for the environment, but is it damaging your health? If you’re among Britain’s 600,000 vegans – or the estimated 400,000 more who signed up for Veganuary this year – the chances are you stopped eating animal products for the sake of the environment and your health. If you need to take additional supplements to not fall apart, then it is not a sound diet. Any excuse to keep destroying the environment with factory farms. It’s not good for the environment either.
