Coronavirus: Care homes could 'go to the wall' as costs rise

Image captionCare homes"could go to the wall" due to rising costs from the coronavirus pandemic, bosses have said.

BBC England spoke to 102 care homes and providers across the country, which between them care for more than 6,500 residents and have about 9,000 staff.. By 19 May, that number had fallen to 30. Mike Padgham, who runs four homes in North Yorkshire and is chairman of the Independent Care Group, said he was worried about the rising costs of the pandemic, from personal protective equipment to extra staff to cover for those self-isolating as well as lost income from empty beds. His own homes have lost an estimated £100,000, and it is difficult for care home providers to restrict the use of agency staff as they try to fill the gaps left by those who have to self-isolate.

"The NHS and social care have been on the front line together from day one, but social care has only just been recognised," he said.

Not surprising as all their paying clients have been allowed to DIE.

a lot of them should be shut down and prosecuted.

Do you mean the profits for multi millionaire business people are sliding so they may start closing them. Care my ass. Private business making rich owners richer, whilst paying staff lowest wages that are legal.

Another domination of why a private health care system can work. During the good times money can be made. But the minute there's trouble suddenly margins shrink and the business model fails.

More resource consuming elderly folk culled by our virtue signalling government. They're just sooo loving! Wait for the 'demise pill' to come along. You get to 65, check into a euthanasia clinic for a couple days and have an end of life party before committing suicide. Niiice!

Is that because they’re not properly funded?

84% of care homes are privately owned. Some charge up to £2000 a week for patient care. If these rip off business go to the wall - then good!

The whole care system needs a revamp. It doesn’t work currently. Either it’s brought under welfare state or it’s scraped!

Care home staff should earn high wages since they do one of the most valuable job on earth .

Why are care homes not brought under the NHS
