A new report estimates that 19,500 people have not been diagnosed due to missed referrals

Research suggests the backlog will take a decade to clear even if hospitals achieve 5% more treatments than before the pandemic treatment backlog that has built up in England during the pandemic, a new report suggests.

But if that figure could be pushed up to 15%, backlogs could be cleared by next year, the report suggests. ‘We estimate that the number of cancers diagnosed while they are still highly curable fell from 44% before to pandemic to 41% last year.’The study suggests that treating 90% of these people when they are eventually diagnosed could mean the backlog in chemotherapy and radiotherapy could take until 2028 and 2033 respectively to clear.
