This is a poorly written article. You have failed to point out that UK passports don't actually have a 'gender option'. They have a 'sex option' of which there are only two, male and female. 'Non-binary' is not and never has been classed as a 'sex option'.
And what would the purpose of this be? For all the use this will do, you may as well also list someone's fashion sense, favourite food, and so forth.

Passports record 'sex' not 'gender'. 'Sex' is the protected characteristic in the Equality Act, not 'gender'. Equality evidence as required in law cannot be collected if 'gender' and X are used in all documentation.

Uk passports do not have gender on them, if people want a gender marker on their passports then they should ask for it to be added. I prefer for it to be optional though as I don't want gender anywhere near my passport. Uk passports currently recorded sex not gender.

The biometric photo on your passport is still going to classify you as male or female. Most gates are now automatic too, so the only person who's going to see that X is the passport holder.
