Using criteria adopted by protestors in recent days, any half-competent historian could make a case to remove almost every statue erected in Britain from the 17th to the late 20th century. One could also argue for the closure of many public buildings – including galleries, museums and concert halls – that owe their existence to the philanthropy of people who made money by means we now find offensive, notably the slave trade.
mssassysally Get rid of the race baiting lecturors
The lower social order are fully equipped to make illiterate decions.
I don’t agree. That said if we don’t want his statue - and I think it should come down - we shouldn’t be accepting his money so the Rhodes Scholarship should cease
we don't need statues of slave traders, but neither do we need to be told warped history trying to blame all Britons for the slave trade, the masses were poor, no vote, no land, each day just trying to dmfind next meal
It won’t because Labour the BBC and the Guardian will encourage it.
Well, Simon, if your 'cultural heritage''s pillars consist of slavery, oppression and similarly agreeable things, there's something very wrong with said heritage (and anyone defending it) and it well deserves being shat upon.
Institutional racism and xenophobia must end in modern Britain and if this requires uncovering and ditching the statues of racist slavers and the cultural heritage that perpetuates racism it must be done.
AvEngSciPol There is no evidence to support trolling newspaper Telegraph claims that politicians, kings, queens, media, nobility, rich and powerful are heroes of society. BigData does not support it. Its time to retire all of them and replace them with true heroes of society.
It is cultural genocide and must stop
Totally agree
'The demand to raze our monuments is self-indulgent, arrogant and historically illiterate. This must end, and it must end now' writes Simon Heffer. Oh, yes, this is exactly what should happen to prove how ready you are to undo the pangs and throes of racism.
History is to learn lesson from. Have we learnt anything?None, still slavery is going on in one way or another. Sex slaves are still here.Wars still going finish this first otherwise in future our descendants will condemn us
Heffer always hits the proverbial nail on the head. We don't demolish monuments in the name of political correctness. We don't 'correct' history. That would be to suggest that history was 'wrong'. We learn to understand history. We adapt, we empathise, we educate ourselves.
Before I say this I want to make it clear I deplore racism but I am puzzled why there is so many double standards being applied to statues. If Coulson & Rhodes have to be torn down, Mandela has to come down in Parl’mnt Square. You can’t pick & choose. 🤷♂️
Said by Mr Heffer. As such I must object. Some statues must fall. & Some will. A slave owner had no right to a statue.
Self-indulgent my arse, stop tipping us bollox
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Perhaps give the stuff in the museum's back to where they came from before you close them.
Simon Heffer no body asked for your opinion babes 😌x
Correct, centuries of murder, rape and slavery. It needs to be remembered.
The funniest thing about those wanting to remove Rhodes is the fact they keep saying he was involved in slavery, even when he was born 20 years after it was abolished.
