, Lord Frost again warned Brussels London could unilaterally waive some of the terms of its agreement if the bloc failed to budge.
He also warned the UK could still trigger Article 16 - which allows either side to effectively override large parts of the agreement - if the EU and UK could not agree on changes to the existing protocol. It would use this to gut the protocol while calculating that the EU's ability to retaliate is limited or or at least would take a long time to amount to anything. The Brexit minister said the protocol represented "a moment of EU overreach when the UK's negotiating hand was tied" and that it could not "reasonably last in its current form".
Sir Jeffrey Donaldson, the leader of the Democratic Unionist Party - Northern Ireland's largest unionist party - said if the current protocol was not replaced with a long-term solution Northern Ireland would be exposed to "further harm and instability".if its demands over the Northern Ireland Protocol are not met.Ulster Unionist assembly member Steve Aiken said it was "self-evident" the existing protocol was not working.
SDLP MLA Matthew O'Toole said Lord Frost's remarks represented a "deliberate distortion of facts and contempt for people here".
It's not going to happen, he knows it and it trying to blame the EU for a fantasy Brexit that is destroying and tearing the country apart
Isn’t about time these unelected officials are booted out, they are worse than than the elected ministers and that’s saying something…
Looking to demonise the EU for the UK Government's mistakes .
There , fixed it for you
Propose all you like, you already signed a deal and neither Europe nor Ireland are interested in your revision.
What about the old one he enthusiasticly endorsed and signed? 🤔
night As Lord Frost clearly got the deal badly wrong, should be not actually be sacked?
1/2 The deal ‘was agreed in haste’. Shoddy work Mr Frost which begs the question why are you still in a job? But a deal is a deal. Fine. Walk away and trigger Article 16. See what that does for Anglo-Irish relations when a hard border emerges on the island of Ireland.
No tough shit. Prime Minister Johnson made a deal with EU that Northern Ireland must remain in single market. Just because the Tories don't like deal doesn't mean they get to change it. The EU must remain firm on this.
what a load of bs, frost never ever had any intention of honouring any deal done with the eu........
Who wrote the last one? The one that 10DowningStreet signed and Parliament ratified? Newsnight
The Brexit jihadists will suck this one in and blame the EU. Facts will never get in the way of a good story.
The Tories cannot have NI doing well and showing up what Brexit is doing to the rest of the UK.
He agreed to the protocol, it stays, end of the discussion
I like how we can sign a legally binding agreement and then just say... fuck it. Article16 Brexit LordFrost
This can't be the same guy who declared his negotiations an 'excellent deal... he had been proud to secure'?! Can it?!
