He said he would not rule out suspending parliament if they tried to block a no-deal Brexit.

With just two weeks to go until Tory party members cast their final ballots and choose the UK’s next Prime Minister, the pair battled it out on ITV for their first head-to-head debate.

Mr Johnson said he would be the best man to take on the ‘semi-Marxist, wealth and job-destroying lunacy of Jeremy Corbyn and the Labour Party’. ‘And to those watching at home, I will be your prime minister, whoever you vote for, as I bring together our amazing United Kingdom.’He said Mr Johnson’s ‘do or die’ approach would make it more likely to trigger an early general election because parliament would be too hostile to a no-deal Brexit.

Mr Hunt said: ‘Being prime minister is about telling people what they need to hear, not just what they want to hear.’‘We need leadership that is going to guide us through a big constitutional crisis and make a great success of Brexit, that means being honest with people about the challenges.’‘I think this country needs a bit of optimism frankly,’ said Mr Johnson

Mr Johnson was challenged on his pledge to slash taxes for the country’s highest earners, which Mr Hunt says sends ‘the wrong message about our party’.
