It comes as six NHS Trusts declare critical incidents due to pressures

linked to “extreme and unprecedented” staff shortages.

What awaits Boris Johnson in Number 10 at the start of the New Year? ITV News Deputy Political Editor Anushka Asthana explainsIn an internal message from Mr Cummins shared on Twitter, he told staff that "sadly, despite everyone’s best efforts, many of our patients are still receiving a level of care and experience that falls below the level of standards we would like".

He pledged to “make sure that we look after our NHS any way that we can” and urged people to get the booster vaccine.Mr Johnson said: “Make sure we follow a Plan B, get boosted but also help the NHS with their staffing requirements, and we’re looking at what we can do to move people into those areas that are particularly badly affected.

Matthew Taylor, chief executive of the NHS Confederation, said: “In many parts of the health service, we are currently in a state of crisis. In the face of high levels of demand and staff absence some hospitals are having to declare a ‘critical incident’. "Primary care is having to add caring for Covid-19 patients and trying to keep them out of hospitals to driving the booster programme and dealing with unprecedented underlying demand which is driven in part by the millions of unwell people waiting for appointments and operations.”Speaking to BBC Breakfast, Mr Zahawi said: “There’s some really good data from London that it looks like the infection rates are plateauing, if not yet coming down.
