Blackburn's new wedding venue set for abandoned club

An abandoned historic social club on the outskirts of a town centre could become a wedding hall and conference centre.

A planning application has been submitted for the former Cob Wall Working Men’s Club in Daisy Lane, Blackburn. The Daisyfield premises of Whalley Old Road – which had been home to the club for more than 100 years when it closed earlier this century – are currently vacant.Ahmed Begum has now asked Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council for permission to convert them into a major functions hub. His application proposes ‘change of use existing vacant former working men’s club into mix use including restaurant, functions, wedding hall and conference centre including insertion of extractor flues’.

The club has seen two attempts to revive the building fail. In 2004 planning permission was granted for it to become a function hall with a restaurant and conference centre. In 2013 a bid to give the former club a new lease of life as a convenience store and cafe was also approved by councillors. Both applications were strongly opposed by nearby residents and businesses on grounds of noise, nuisance, rubbish, smells and traffic.
