Beta, also known as 501.V2 or B.1.351, has some significant genetic changes that experts are studying. It was first identified in South Africa. All viruses, including the one that causes Covid-19, constantly mutate into new versions or variants. These tiny genetic changes happen as the virus makes new copies of itself to spread and thrive.

Most are inconsequential, and a few can even be harmful to the virus's survival, but some variants can make the virus more infectious or threatening to the host - humans. How worrying are the Covid variants? Is it more dangerous? Some of the changes Beta has undergone involve the virus's spike protein - the part that gains the virus entry into human cells. It is also the bit that vaccines are designed around, which is why experts are concerned about these particular mutations.

Beta, along with a few other variants of coronavirus, such as Delta and Alpha, have been labelled "variants of concern". These have some worrying changes experts want to keep a very close eye on.Beta carries a mutation, called N501Y, which appears to make it more contagious or easy to spread.

Another mutation, called E484K, could help the virus dodge a person's immune system, and may affect how well vaccines work. There is no evidence that the South Africa variant causes more serious illness for the vast majority of people. Read more: BBC News (UK) »

BBC Weather presenter pulled over by dog on live TV

Carol Kirkwood says she's fine after taking this tumble on BBC Breakfast when the guide dog went astray.

WHAT a surprise The BBC unquestioningly parrot what the government says Dr Goebbels would be proud The UK government is concerned about most things, but above all their own popularity. Worrying like sheep. This is the time where we have the technology to proceed. If the vaccine doesn't work on this variant, then modifying current models is much easier. Leave. Us. Alone.

France has consistently been at the forefront of UK bashing. Payback is a b*tch. Not another variant 😜😜 🤣🤣 I'm confused, wasn't the beta variant originally the Kent variant before it was deemed politically incorrect to call the delta variant the Indian variant? 🤷 When did all the beta move to France or does delta kill beta?

The UK will allow the US to enter even though they are surging in covid cases with over a hundred million still that won't vaccinate yet you refuse Canada to enter and we are the most vaccinated in the world. Where’s the update? 🤷🏻‍♀️ Apparently Beta & Gamma represent 3% of the cases in France (or the far flung reunion islands). But then we put our RNLI at risk. Rather than u-turn those folk needing to be saved on a daily basis. Funny how they don't have any staffing issues.
