The Equal Pay Act at 50, Health visitor, Rachael Hearson, on her 40 year career, Public Toilets - access and Coronavirus. It’s fifty years since the Equal Pay Act became law, though employers were given a couple of years to prepare for the change to take effect. The legislation followed the strike of a group of women machinists at the Ford factory in Dagenham who wanted to be paid just as a man would for doing skilled work.
Health visiting is one of those professions that most people think is a bit of a non-job. After 40 years in the NHS and 30 as a health visitor, Rachael Hearson tells us why this is not the case. She’s written about her experiences and explains how the role has changed and why it’s needed more now than ever before. Her book is called Handle With Care.
Public toilets have been a well-known victim of council cuts, leaving the UK with 50% fewer toilets than a decade ago. Coronavirus has caused even more closures – albeit temporarily. But where does that leave people who need urgent access to the loo? Jo Umbers from the Bladder and Bowel community explains how this issue is affecting women of all ages. Raymond Martin, from the British Toilet Association, discusses the economic and health importance of public toilets in a post-Covid world.
I worry about being out with my baby in case I need to change her
Concerning the public toilet issue, we will have to beckon on the government and councils on the urgent need to increase the number of loos across England post-Covid era with a view to improving access to these facilities. I wouldn't know why the cut in the first instance.
50-year-on, looking like the spirited effort of a group of women machinists in Dagenham, which birthed the Equal Pay Act have refused to deeply permeate our male-dominated political landscape. It was supposed 2 have been a cross-generational blessing sort of to our modern women.
God 😀 ... being a London taxi driver at night , do I know the feeling of hunting an open loo ! ..🧜♀️Ian just pees anywhere quite x as he’s a slob 😀💋
healthvisiting it is so sad reading some these posts and the HV profession should hang its head in shame for sitting back and allowing it to happen.
healthvisiting no mention of the loss of autonomy and the increase in micromanaging.
healthvisiting no mention of the reduction in services that can support families or that have such a strict criteria they will not accept referrals.
healthvisting little discussion on the pressure HVs are under to complete universal targets at expense of families.
healthvisiting no mention of constant monitoring on IT system or late nights trying to keep up with records.
healthvisiting was really expecting a lot more after hearing about Rachel the HV being on. Unfortunately not awe inspiring. This coming from a male Health Visitor
I've never even met my HV. The 2 times they did come they sent a supply who was covering the area. No contact since 6 weeks. We had a really traumatic birth and not really any aftercare. It's been shocking.

No contact from my HV during this lockdown period. Trying to wean a baby who has a cow's milk allergy without support, no idea if baby is gaining weight as she should be. Due back to work soon with no childcare available and no option to furlough 😔 maternitypetition
In Greenwich Health Visiting is being handed over to Charities Big mistake to hand over commissioning of health visiting services to cash strapped Local Authorities

I would like to thank LynnMcNaughton HVfor quite frankly saving my life 20 years ago. I had post partum psychosis which she spotted and when I asked her to look after my children when I went to take my life, she ran around and emergency psychiatry services. Never forget her xx
FrancesOGrady DLA_Piper I have always argued that we must value caring and especially parenting by paying for it. This means we shouldn't go to work and justify affordable child care. Pay a wage that offers the cleaning staff as much as the person they clean for. We are not a respectful nation.
I had a fantastic health visitor following an equally fantastic midwife 23 years ago. Marie and Linda, both so wise (sages-femmes) pragmatic and perceptive. A precious and necessary resource when you have no local family support.
Health visitors were , pre First World War , lady Sanitary inspectors - the profession that went on to be Environmental Health - we still share so many aims and values in health protection and preventative work. The_CIEH
FrancesOGrady DLA_Piper Made me reflect on just how privileged I am. From starting work in 1973 I have never not had equal pay. Does not stop me shouting out for others
I would love to thank my Health visitor from 29 years ago in RWB. Later to motherhood , no experience , used to being in control at work . Bink always made me feel I was doing OK and generally saved sanity. So sad service I had is no longer universally available here.
FrancesOGrady DLA_Piper It is so disappointing to hear these conversations ignore the single biggest obstacle to Equal anything for women: Paternity. Until we change our laws and expectations so that men take up paternity equally with women taking maternity, companies will continue to discriminate.
FrancesOGrady DLA_Piper Francis O'Grady talking a lot of sense this morning. Yes. ALL working people, indeed ALL people (whether able to work or not)need fair treatment and more equality. I doubt very much that this Conservative government will deliver this! Keep on keeping on Francis and the Unions!
FrancesOGrady DLA_Piper Hello. You’ve just stated that you pay the woman who cleans your home less than the window cleaners. So I’m wondering since this realisation, have you rectified this? Thanks Kim
FrancesOGrady DLA_Piper Ps. Didn't like the dig at motor mechanics - who are engineers- my relatives are motor engineers &they are still very poorly paid and poorly treated sector despite often being highly trained & so that was a bit of a bum note Francis!
FrancesOGrady DLA_Piper I agree the Unions have been sexist in past but I do believe they are now changing hugely. Not so sure the current Conservative govt inner circle looks much different from a century ago - public school educated & very rich men with very little understanding of most women's lives.
FrancesOGrady DLA_Piper The Freemans Five fight for equal pay....
FrancesOGrady DLA_Piper Fantastic to hear recording of one of my heroes (heroines!) Barbara Castle LabourMP-who should have been this country's 1st woman PM.Great programme today Woman's Hour, thank you from a working class lass(who knows I've been underpaid all my life because I work in care ... sigh.)
