‘I never talked about it and I thought it was just me being a bit neurotic really’ Rachel tells joeyfornow how her mother’s death at 40 has shaped her thinking about her own life.

Diana resonating with young people today; universities minister Michelle Donelan; Outliving Your Mum; author Jessica Ryn.The fourth series of The Crown currently airing on Netflix lays bare the ups and downs of the royal marriage of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer . The drama has introduced a new generation to the Princess, her depression and struggles with the eating disorder bulimia.

Next week the government begins a scheme to get more than a million university students back home safely to their families in time for Christmas. This includes on-campus mass testing using self test kits which give results in 30 minutes, cutting out the need to use a laboratory . Jane Garvey talks to the Universities Minister Michelle Donelan about this and other issues-from the rise in students experiencing mental health problems to the challenges of online tuition.

How does it feel to reach the age your Mum was when she died? In a new series we talk to four women who feel a clock ticking. Their stories are all different but they have one thing in common – none of them have felt able to talk about this before. They didn’t want to worry their loved ones or vocalise these dark thoughts. They describe their fears as well as the joy of ordinary life and the freedom that comes from realising that you are not your mother.

‘The Extraordinary Hope of Dawn Brightside’ is the debut novel of Jessica Ryn. Published yesterday, Jessica, having only recently finished her MA in Creative Writing, joins Jane to talk about the inspiration for her setting her first book in a hostel for the homeless in Dover.

jenniebond1 And despite the fiction in The Crown the Royal family’s and specifically the Prince of Wales’s responsibility for Diana’s unhappiness cannot be denied

joeyfornow Interesting to hear this.Thank u. Since I was 21 I thought I wld be dead by 51 & wrote special messages in my kids b-day cards. A brca test at 44 changed this for me & am nearly 50 & don’t live in fear anymore but looking fwd to being 52. Interesting re jumpers under bed- me too

joeyfornow I so relate to this. My Mum died at 55 and as I got to that age I definitely felt like it was impossible and even a little impertinent to live longer than she did. When I turned 56 there was a heady sense of life and experiencing everyday as a gift. 🎁 Thank you for sharing.

joeyfornow I got to 39, the age my mum died during lockdown and so felt being made to make home with my 3 young children and simply enjoy the simple things was so special. Totally understand the guesa speaking right now! I wrote a COVID Chronicle about it for PM...

joeyfornow My mum born premature in 1915 into working class family made it to 100 yrs. Very fit woman. At 70 I cannot do what she did at this age. The bar is high!

joeyfornow Heartbreaking listening to this and I identrify with so much of what Rachel says. I’m approaching the age my mum was when she died young and the terror of leaving my children motherless is a deep hidden part of me. What an incredibly composed interviewee, I’m in awe of her.

joeyfornow I had a similar fear. My G-father died when he was 45 (never met him as my mum was only 11 herself then), following on from that my Uncle (my Mum's brother) died at the age of 45, and I was always worried about my brother (who I'm close to) dying at 45. Glad to say he's now 54!

joeyfornow It's the same for men and fathers I think. I often find myself adding up how much time I have left based on the age my Dad was when he died. Just 13 to go now 😐

joeyfornow How depressing!

joeyfornow I spent my lifetime struggling with the effects of my Mother's death when I was a child. I hid it because I couldn't seem to get by it. Milestones were worst. I urge any woman that lost their Mum under the age of 25 to read Motherless Daughters by Hope Endelman. Amazing relief.

joeyfornow Turn the sound up!!
