New ballet inspired by Jacqueline du Pre by choreographer Cathy Marston; Global Climate Change leader and author Christiana Figueres; Phoebe Judge and her podcast Criminal.A new ballet 'The Cellist' opens tonight at the Royal Opera House in London. It’s inspired by the life and work of the British cellist, Jacqueline du Pré. It portrays the highs and lows of the virtuoso’s life after she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, aged 28.
If you’re someone who follows the various targets on climate change, then the year 2050 is surely on your radar. It’s the very latest date scientists agree the world needs to be carbon neutral by in order to avoid life-changing and irreversible damage to the planet. A mere 30 years away – a lot of radical change needs to happen in the next TEN years to make that 2050 target feasible. Christiana Figueres has co-authored a book called ‘The Future We Choose’.
The American podcast ‘Criminal’ has over 5.5million downloads each month, and 133 episodes to date. Each episode tells a different real life story, ranging from Jolly Jane, the notorious woman poisoner, to the tale behind the phrase ‘Stockholm Syndrome’. Phoebe Judge, host and co-creator, joins Jane to talk podcasting, women criminals, and why people find true crime so fascinating?
Your presenter today was happy to say she read the hateful and harmful stuff in the media which probably led to a suicide. To admit to a prurient and perhaps sadistic interest is fairly normal, I think, but not to have a moral structure which would restrain her is inexcusable.
I agree with nazirafzal re Caroline. If a man hit a woman and then she withdrew help in a prosecution we'd all be up in arms re this. It would be said she'd be coerced. The law must apply to all equally.
SBSisters The religious ceremony allows men to take several wives at a time, so often village girls are brought into the UK for marriage, and being unaware of British law, can be 'divorced' at any time. A civil marriage certificate should be a requirement for their continued stay in the UK
CFigueres Few pts: CFigueres advocated 'Rapid change' 1. China uses 54% world coal, huge CO2. Adds many power plants /yr. Is she influencing China President Xi? Even if USA ratified Paris, China will build OUR electronics for next 20++ years, all using coal power! Dilemma. Blinkered? AGW
SBSisters Thanks for explaining the issue better than the news did.
SBSisters Pity you did not bring out that the problems of 'Islamic marriages' are essentially the same as the problems with other religious-only marriages and with 'common law marriages'. I don't think it helps to imply Islamic women deserve special help.
SBSisters Islamic marriage has to remain a non-legal ceremony If recognised, 20,000 polygamous marriages among Muslims in UK would be legal while everyone else in similar family arrangements would be charged with bigamy They already have multiple benefits paid BBCwomanshour WomansHour
CathyRMarston RoyalOperaHouse I'm booked to see the live ROH cinema relay of this - can't wait!
SBSisters If UK high schools included the advice from Pragna Patel in their citizen curriculum it would at least mean that young women in the UK were informed.
CFigueres Unequivocal message that *we are in the most consequential decade for the future of humanity*. Put out at 10:30am on a Monday. BBC if you believe this then isn’t it your responsibility as a PSB to broadcast it, and what we can do, non-stop?
CFigueres I can't even get my supermarket to stop sending me plastic bags! I'm a little sceptical of this narrative - how much impact can we really have as individuals whilst massive corporations carry on with business as usual.
CFigueres I really enjoyed listening to clear answers to the big questions. The climate and ecological emergency is the biggest issue facing humanity ever!
CFigueres Great that we should have 2 children in the UK, then why does nearly every tv show or sit com have 3 children? I’ve noticed and thought about this often over the last few years. Is it a subliminal message?
CFigueres Focusing on numbers of children she recommends and finishing on that point seems irresponsible to me as that is the most emotive and difficult action to ask of people, making it easier to dismiss everything she advocates. Disappointing and sensationalist of woman’s hour.
CFigueres She didn’t mention consuming less 🤔
I have not bought or read a tabloid since the death of Princess Diana. It's my choice. I talk about it. I turn them over and place them upside down in shops. It's my power.
Celebrities or not, female or male - some comments on social media by people who do not know them are horrendous and unjust. Why do people do it? How can it be justified? We seem to form opinions from what is written , when at the end of the day it is none of our business.
CFigueres Remember that Chaz& Dave song? 'I got my beer on the sideboard here, let the missus sort it out if he comes round here' Always the same. Men make an almighty mess, women clear it up 🙄
The thing is, we didn't need a death to tell us this. We can see it all the time.
