'It feels as if the worst assumptions are being made about someone's reasons for sending their child back' As schools in England prepare to reopen to children in years one and six, some parents' social media feeds have turned toxic

Sophia, 25, had a similar experience when she commented on a Facebook group for single mums that her five-year-old daughter would be returning to preschool.

Sophia's daughter has special educational needs and for weeks now she hasn't had access to her usual speech therapy. "If you fall into the group of people who are choosing differently to me or you simply don't have a choice, this isn't a judgement of you or a dismissal of your situation," she wrote.Harriet Shearsmith says each parent is the best judge of what is right for their child

"Lockdown has made us all much quicker to lose our tempers. We are much more frayed and we are all in very stressful positions, regardless of what those positions might be.""It feels like all the social 'rules' have changed," she says."Everyone feels very differently about homeschooling and screen time and even just interpreting the government guidelines.

"I said I found it offensive. That does imply that anyone who is happy to send their child back to school is throwing them to the wolves, so to speak, whereas actually we just want some normality for our children, and, you know, education and socialisation."The issue seems to have caused a deep divide, she notes with regret. She has now minimised her time on social media and advises other parents in her position to do the same.

My children have been going to school and will continue to go to school. My decision as a parent. What any one else say or think doesn’t really matter. Stop judging the decisions of others.

It is up to parents whether they send their children to school or not. There is no wrong or right thing to do. Every parent should do their own risk assessment and make a decision based on the outcome.

This article is wrong as it states years 1 and 6 are returning when in fact it is preschool, reception, year 1 and year 6. At least get the facts right

SaveTheAnderson, some kids have no school to return to. New management needed for asd school.

LockdownShaming. The media have driven this and yet....

I’m a parent who’s done everything by the book during this pandemic, yet I’ll still be judged if I choose to send my year one child back to school. I just want the best for my child and that’s a heavy decision to make as to what to do for the best.

There is risk in doing something and risk in doing nothing. It’s about reducing risk to a practical minimum. It’s right that we support teachers to do that. As we gain confidence and information we support those who are not ready for that step yet and we support those that are.

Being used as lab rats plain and simple.

Get children back to school. All the paranoid parents can keep their kids off forever if they want but then must be accountable for the damage it does. Will give the sensible families kids more chance of succeeding in life with children that are a year behind them.

Because people are idiots and can't think for themselves. This is what happens in a free-thinking society. 😆

Shows you who your friends are doesn't it. Do what you feel is best, not what people tell you is best.

750 deaths in the UK in 48 hours & infection rate high. It is too soon.Too disorganised & stupid to choose year 1. This Con government getting wrong at every step of the way in this pandemic. My son is a school teacher and has worked throughout ... increasing numbers is so wrong

98% of Twitter nowadays is toxic

The same hypocritical parents who are happy for supermarket workers to keep them in food whilst they sit at home doing unnecessary online shopping expecting warehouse workers and delivery drivers to work. Ok for others to take a risk but not prepared to do the same themselves.

I bet if you ask a majority of parents they'd say WHOOPI

If it's not safe, there should be no pressure on the parents.

The six week holidays are soon anyway so what they learn in the next few weeks will be forgotten anyway , it's a pointless risk - just seems like they are being used as guinea pigs

Look at south Korea

It's a parents choice

I wouldn't let mine go because of who they could infect outside of school and also the teachers

Most parents are letting their children go out and play with their friends! So what’s different about sending them to School, perhaps it’s because they need an excuse to stop them going back to work. The irony of some parents amazes me.

Unless your kids go to a public school that nearly all have said we'll reassess in September.

There is an easy answer... Don't post stuff like that on social media if you aren't able to deal with the negative side... Not everyone is going to 'like' everyone's posts

10DowningStreet NicolaSturgeon This is now getting out of hand. Fear has become worse than the disease itself. We know alot more about the virus now, have we learnt nothing from the 80s and how we handled a certain virus then? Didn't think so from the current shambles.

Each to their own, but don’t judge. My youngest goes back to nursery on Monday. He has delayed speech development so would benefit from being back, and the nursery have taken some very impressive measures. My oldest would love to go back to school, but he’s year 2,so not yet.

Leaving politics aside. Schooling your child at home is the best thing to do at the moment. School fills their minds with rubbish anyway. I bet I could teach basic English and Maths better than school.

Siblings in same school should be allowed to go at same time

The is being feed buy the teacher unions for political gain

Siblings in same scholl should be allowed to go at same

I think it would right for my children to go back unfortunately I have a children in year 6 and year 4 and would prefer that the go together instead of telling them its only safe for year 6 to go. Will have to wait until year 4 can go also

We need the social distancing The beaches are to full of politics science and people who don't want the school's to reopen

I would prefer kids in school than the tens of thousands of kids in parks and on beaches etc giving bad parents an excuse to be even worse parents. I get the dilemma for decent parents but in my view in school is the best option if possible

Children may be at lower risk from this virus than other age groups but they can still spread it to the vulnerable so how is this a sensible idea? Why not wait until the R number is a lot lower? This, I’m sure, will have dire consequences.

Are these the same parents who will take them to the beach this weekend.

People don't take others situations into account. Do what's best for yours, and keep your opinions to yourselves about others.

Breaking News: Maitlis begins preparing an opening monologue to condemn parents who send their kids to school.

Yet it's ok for some parents to drag kids to supermarkets and onto packed beaches.

Unfortunately the point is lost... The Children are at very, very low risk... Unfortunately they are perfect carriers. It's the parents who at risk...

As someone who knows that environment well I know how well children spread viruses. There is still no research or testing to see how many children might be asymptomatic. There is still a risk to other staff and families. Plus some children might get ill. Just not safe yet.🤦‍♀️

They don’t have to send their children

Kids have more chance dying on the way to school or being hit by lightning than from covid If you're one of those parents keeping your kids off school your paranoia will starve your kids of education, friendships & infect them with unjustified anxiety. Be a better parent!

Apart from possible health concerns, there is another problem here. Not all parents are investing time in teaching children at home, leading to many falling behind. How will it be possible to teach students at differing levels, when school returns? Some will lag way behind.

South Korea have closed 🔐 schools again after a resurgence of COVID-19 pandemic.. Take lessons xoxo

Schools have been honest and clear it wont be like how it was before.Students will have to sit on their own and are not able 2 play with their friends. They will have to sit further apart at lunch and young children cant play with toys so R/Nursery children wont have much to use.

I'm not concerned about the virus, children are 4x more likely to be struck by lightning, I am concerned that the conditions and environment that particularly early years children are going back to would breach the schools own guidelines on what constitutes emotional abuse.

not surprising really, you the BBC are one of the causes of the mass hysteria and piss poor reporting over this outbreak.

After listening to the scientists last night saying the R number is stil higher and in some places almost one how is it safe to open schools ? They also said its 54 thoushand new cases a week. That is before the current measures being changed on 1st.Schools wont be the same.🤦‍♀️

Parents shouldn’t feel under pressure from their own peers; any problems they should speak to the school. This is far from an easy decision and schools will not judge parents for making a decision whether to send or not send their child back yet.

My children haven't stopped attending school. That’s been met with some cynical points of view

Sending you kids to school in a pandemic, when they are very much spreaders, and also DIE from it, is like sending them to the showers in Nazi Germany. If you had kids, you should not have counted on schools to be your babysitter.

Middle class crab mentality socialists should burn in hell

Why have the future of our schools threatened by the invasion that is currently happening of our borders?

what a joke. I can't believe you paid someone to write that

BBC not reporting the news really - making it based on selected Facebook comments-it’s almost as if the BBC do not want us to navigate out of this / only on the agenda they want to push
