Then from 4am on January 9, day two tests can be swapped from expensive PCR tests to cheaper lateral flow tests for vaccinated travellers - who won't need to isolate while they wait for their results. The state recorded 51,356 new Covid cases and nine deaths, surpassing New South Wales’ 45,098 new cases. This is true in regional New South Wales and Victoria, and is trending that way in Queensland. Nine people also died with Covid in NSW.

Saturday’s case numbers in Victoria are more than double Friday’s figure, but health authorities say almost half (26,428) the positive cases in the past 24 hours were RAT results, with many of those taken earlier in the week.
