Aukus: US and UK face global backlash over Australia defence deal
The nuclear submarine deal with Australia has angered France and raised fears of a war with China.
Watch: Australia’s ‘risky bet’ to side with US over ChinaThe US and UK are facing growing international criticism over a new security pact signed with Australia. The deal - seen as an effort to counter China - will see the US and UK give Australia the technology to build nuclear-powered submarines.
But the move angered France, which said it had been "stabbed in the back", while China accused the three powers of having a "Cold War mentality".And the pact has raised fears that it could provoke China into a war.The alliance, known as Aukus, was announced by US President Joe Biden, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his Australian counterpart Scott Morrison on Wednesday.
While they did not mention China, Aukus is being widely viewed as an effort to counter Beijing's influence in the contested South China Sea.EXPLAINED: Tensions in the South China SeaMr Johnson later told MPs that the agreement was "not intended to be adversarial" to China. headtopics.com
But the prime minister was questioned by his predecessor, Theresa May, about whether the deal could lead to Britain being dragged into war with China. She asked the prime minister about the "implications" of the partnership in the event of a Chinese invasion of Taiwan.
Mr Johnson replied: "The United Kingdom remains determined to defend international law and that is the strong advice we would give to our friends across the world, and the strong advice that we would give to the government in Beijing."Democratic Taiwan sees itself as a sovereign state, but Beijing has increased pressure on the island which it views as a breakaway province.
'A very low moment'Meanwhile Washington has sought to quell anger in Paris at the pact, which has scuppered a multibillion-dollar submarine deal France had signed with Australia.France's Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian called the announcement a "stab in the back".
He called it a "brutal, unilateral and unpredictable decision" that reminded him of former president Donald Trump.French diplomats in Washington cancelled a gala to celebrate ties between the US and France in retaliation.media captionWhy is everyone fighting over the South China Sea? headtopics.com
"It's a very low moment," France's former ambassador to the US, Gérard Araud, told the BBC's World Tonight programme. "The US knew that this contract and this strategic contract were essential French national interests, and the US didn't care."
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken called France "a vital partner" and said Washington would still work "incredibly closely" with Paris.White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki shrugged off the French criticisms."There are a range of partnerships that include the French and some partnerships that don't, and they have partnerships with other countries that don't include us," she said. "That is part of how global diplomacy works."
'Profound strategic shift'The pact, which will also see the allies share cyber capabilities, artificial intelligence and other undersea technologies, was described as showing "profound strategic shifts" by the UK's national security adviser Stephen Lovegrove.
It means Australia will become just the seventh nation in the world to operate nuclear-powered submarines.Mr Lovegrove said the pact was "perhaps the most significant capability collaboration in the world anywhere in the past six decades".China, meanwhile, headtopics.com
has accused the allies of having a "Cold War mentality"that would hurt their own interests. The Chinese state-run Global Times warned of an arms race for nuclear submarines, adding that Australian soldiers were likely to be the "first to die" in a Chinese "counterattack".
But Australia's defence minister, Peter Dutton, brushed aside Beijing's reaction. The year when Australia and China hit 'lowest ebb'"This is not the first time that we've seen different outbursts from China in terms of Australia's position," he said.
"We are a proud democracy in our region. We stand with our neighbours in the Indo-Pacific to ensure enduring peace, and this collaboration makes it a safer region. That's the reality and no amount of propaganda can dismiss the facts." Read more: BBC News (UK) »

Global? 😂 Better than a Chinese one. France is yet again taking its eye off the ball. The diesel deal is a kick in the teeth, but that’s what investment means, we are paying the French to deliver a couple of U.K. Nuclear Power stations as they are far more advanced in this as We + US are with nuclear sub tech.
My friends around the world think the deal is great. What world do you live in? France offered Aus clockwork subs; UK/USA offered them nuclear powered subs. “Global Backlash” 😂👏 Why does the BBC hate Britain Give it a rest BBC….get back to impartial news Why do you the BBC hate Great Britain so much? Erm, France isn’t the world. Despite Brexit.
Aukus pact: UK and US battle to contain international backlashNuclear submarine deal with Australia draws criticism from allies and China amid fears of conflict 🤣🤣 Biden demanding more Boris in the Pacific? Well that's only reasonable innit? I mean to say, China has such HUGE presence in the Atlantic and the Caribbean.
To the BBC, the “world” is the EU. Pathetic. What global backlash? China and France as far as I can see. Has there been a change of name to China Broadcasting Corporation, CBC? Defund BBC. “Global backlash” 🤔🙄🤦🏻♂️ Misleading headline. China France and the EU object. No surprise there then. Where’s the global backlash apart from china and france?
Typical BBC crap at reporting the news..always trying to make it..I bet Vanu Atu dont give a damn 1 way or the other . is now getting that the BBC really do not like the country that they are broadcasting in so why the hell is everybody supporting them with taxpayers money 'Global backlash' ... 'Implications' Theresa May suggests AUKUS alliance could lead UK into conflict over TaiwanFORMER PRIME MINISTER Theresa May has suggested the UK's new alliance with Australia and the United States could drag Britain into conflict with China.
🇫🇷🇨🇳you mean? Total bullshit This is insane. What the absolute fuck is going on. Imagine even writing this. By global backlash you mean China (it’s a good thing they are pissed), and France who lost a big contract. The BBC really does appear to hate the Uk… Your bias is showing. Defund the BBC. But......if we had included the French instead it would have been FUKUS..🤣🤣🤣
What a nonsensical post from a taxpayer funded BBC! very upset by this continuous attack the BBC wages on our national sovereignty and I’m an naturalised migrant from the commonwealth! Show some national pride or RishiSunak may need to close the funding ‘GLOBAL backlash’? You mention China and France - hardly surprising. So that’s 2 countries out of 193!!! ‘GLOBAL’ my a*s!!! Who write this crap? DefundTheBBC
No they don’t. Frenchies are a bit peeved, but no one really cares. EU PR team
AUKUS deal may 'make Australia a target for a NUCLEAR strike'As part of a new three-way alliance with the UK and US, Australia will be given the technology to build at least eight nuclear-powered - but not nuclear armed - submarines 🙄 China is doing wonderful work, by Saber Rattling, they are making so-called Free World to spend more Money on USELESS weapon systems instead of human development, making countries like Australia, further damage their own society, while China is further improving lives of Chinese! What's the actual point in nukes. As soon as one is fired then it's literally the end of the world. US UK Russia China all have nukes pointing at one another. It makes no sense, everyone is dead if it goes off
Global Who then Hahaha. You’re really scraping the barrel now to support your socialist/communist ideals. That deal is the right action to take to counter the dangers of China 🇨🇳 and others! USA should pull out of Europe and let the All powerful EU protect the baltic stares and Ukraine. Global ? Who else is upset except France and China ?
Good. Everything we do should be geared towards pissing France off. 'global' 😂 The EU like to play dirty, fine, let's play! Global backlash? It’s China (anyone shocked?) and France (meh)… A ludicrous headline. The Chinese and French don’t like it. That’s it. NATO is dead and UK see that EU is going for own defence. This will be instead of NATO. 😂
Cold war echoes as Aukus alliance focuses on China deterrenceAnalysis: military alliance is more wide-ranging than Five Eyes agreement and may come to define future approach to Indo-Pacific security horrible How much control does China already have? Once set in motion this dangerous mindset will blossom to Cold war 2 with proxy wars in poorer SE Asian countries.
‘Global backlash’ is just China and France!!! BBC typical bias from this nazi organisation! How is that global? Oh well never mind And the BBC is meant to be a trusted news outlet. China and France is not a global backlash So China & France? Big deal. Good deal for USUKA. Global Britain demonstrating it's poodle breed
Global? You mean France and China! C'mon BBC!? This post brexit global domination is all going well for the UK then Upsetting the French makes the deal worth doing alone lol
AUKUS submarine deal with sealed at the G7 summitThe meeting was the culmination of an 18-month plot by Mr Morrison to acquire nuclear submarine technology, and ended with Australia getting its hands on at least eight vessels. Repeat:'Our policy has been one of patience and restraint, as befits a peaceful and powerful nation.. not to be diverted from our central concerns by mere irritants and fanatics. But now further action is required-and it is under way; and these actions may only be the beginning' India, Oh Canada!, the EU should join; 1939 deja vu all over again, guess who is Adolf? Spend. Spend. Spend more money. 🙄
why should there be a war with China? What are they worried about we are democratic countries. Oh yes those little outdated men in the ruling authoritative totalitarian dictatorship don't like change This was master stroke by Biden administration. WHY THE TIMES CHOSE headline on question on “dragging us into a war with China” (Theresa May) SO,in her view China can do whatever they want, expand military, U.K./U.S/AUS must not do same, WE’RE entitled to do same, FOOLISH NOT TO, a war?, course not, just prudence! SkyNews
There’s no global backlash. Fire your editor. China upset as this increases the naval assets against them in the Pacific. France upset as they lost out on a major defence spending contract. Not quite ‘global’ backlash. Day before the EU announced it was flexing its military muscles, which really means France and Germany.
“global backlash” China, the target of the pact, doesn’t like it and France lost a contract. Thats it. What ridiculous reporting More pathetic reporting BBC. 'Global backlash' ? Read your own story for god's sake!
Martin Rowson on the Aukus military pact — cartoonThe US, UK and Australia are setting up a trilateral security partnership aimed at confronting China, which will include helping Australia to build nuclear-powered submarines This cartoonists art is repulsive. Everything I've ever seen by him is extremely ugly. Not only for the actual way he draws/paints, but also for where the inspiration for this art is coming from. Ive never seen him try to inspire hope, only throw shit all over everything. Meanwhile... Due to the classified nature of the work performed at Pine Gap, it is necessarily the case that relatively few people are briefed on its functions & very few are briefed on the most sensitive activities that are undertaken there. MartinRowson is always spot on
