As energy firms record record profits, a warm summer has done nothing to stem the fear of a bleak winter on the streets of Lancashire.
Today , LancsLive spoke to people maxing out their credit card to pay their gas bills and using camping stoves rather than topping up their gas meter. Barely a day ago, Money Saving Expert founder Martin Lewis warned that energy bills will rise another 77 per cent in October. The summer holidays meant it was a quieter day than usual, with the shop which opens once a week normally welcoming in excess of 90 members. That may have been some relief to volunteers who only a few weeks ago had to remain closed when supplier FareShare could not offer any donations.
“This is why I come to places like this because otherwise, what would I do? If it wasn’t for these types of places, I don’t know what I’d do.” Another member, 55-year-old Theresa Waterhouse, is also unable to work due to disabilities relating to spina bifida. Her arthritis means she suffers extra pain and health problems in the cold and therefore she can’t manage with her heating off or regular warm showers.
