24 November 1986: The campaign for a Scottish assembly is now confident that it will get the constitutional convention to decide the country’s future

defeat was unpopular. But there would have to be an improvement on the post-election performance in 1983 after 21 Tories were returned in Scotland to Labour’s 41. Then, the plans for cooperation among anti-Tory parties and a revolt and possible walk-out from the House of Commons resulted in early collapse.
