Antarctic island hits record temperature of 20.75C

The temperature was recorded on an island off the Antarctic continent's northern tip.

Deepest point on land found in Antarctica This latest reading was taken at a monitoring station on Seymour Island, part of a chain of islands off the same peninsula, at the northernmost point of the continent. Although the temperature is a record high, Mr Schaefer emphasized that the reading was not part of a wider study and so, in itself, could not be used to predict a trend. "We can't use this to anticipate climatic changes in the future. It's a data point," he said."It's simply a signal that something different is happening in that area." How fast is Antarctica warming? According to the UN's World Meteorological Organisation (WMO), temperatures on the Antarctic continent have risen by almost 3C over the past 50 years, and that about 87% of the glaciers along its west coast have"retreated" in that time. Over the past 12 years the glaciers have shown an"accelerated retreat" due to global warming, it adds. Last month was also Antarctica's warmest January on record. Image copyright Image caption Temperatures on the continent have risen by almost 3C in 50 years Scientists have warned that global warming is causing so much melting at the South Pole, it will eventually disintegrate - causing the global sea level to rise by at least three metres (10ft) over the coming centuries. The previous record for the entire Antarctic region - which includes the continent, islands and ocean that are in the Antarctic climatic zone - was 19.8C, logged in January 1982. Last July, the Arctic region hit its own record temperature of 21C, logged by a base at the northern tip of Ellesmere Island in the Canadian Arctic. Will they report larger than normal ice caps when winter? No. Summit Camp in Greenland recorded its LOWEST ever temperature of -66.8C on Jan 2nd this year. I guess all that CO2 must've migrated south for the winter. It was 20 degrees at lunchtime. Global warming increases rapidly or bbc is once again muddled.

🥺 It used to be a sub tropical land. Quick get David Shukman there. I love this global warming... We don't need to use our heating as much which saves the planet.... FFS Too many people on the 3rd rock from the sun. Ships about to sink. I’m going n that’s it, Warner there than here !! tropical This is a spot 2000 miles from the South Pole. Grazed by a warm plume wind for a few hours. Greenland just recorded record cold at its heart but strangely, this doesn’t get the headlines.

Location of the temperature 'record' for the idiots.

Iceberg three times the size of PARIS carves off Antarctic glacierWarmer temperatures are taking their toll on the vulnerable glacier in western Antarctica which, if it was to collapse, would trigger a global sea level rise of around four feet. rubbish - no sign of the Eiffel Tower there Another one bites the dust Be more work being done on the iceberg than in Paris!

Outright lie in ident for the picture above & the first paragraph of the piece as temp has exceeded 20.75 in the past. How do these idiots think Antarctica was ever ice free? One anomalous thermometer reading + blatant lie = impartial news. This is why you can trust the BBC 😂 Can you oh so Godly people that can predict what temp will be in 100 hundreds (fucking ridiculous) please send some of this global warming I mean climate change to UK?!?!

Queue the climate hysteria...Is it still 12 years we have left? Or did they reevaluate that to 20? Will the So-called BBC still be sending 500 people to washington to cover Trumps inevitable victory this year? It will only make you sad as well as pumping out more CO2 Global Warmiiiiing!!!!! and climate change...

Global warming and climate change The Antarctic is warm, the Artic is on fire, and in Iowa, it is too damn cold. There is a problem here. Is this good news? Surely it is? BBC report the facts yes it is global warming a combination of volcanic activity below ground and pole shift . not the carbon tax agenda .climate change is natural and normal

Brilliant. Should be on Jet 2's radar soon!

Drink driving teenager avoids conviction by singing for judge'You have exceeded my expectations', judge tells youth found to be four times over legal limit Drunk maybe? He sang 99 bottles of beer on the wall. All the way down to the last beer. 🍻 That's funny

su_brompton How long before Butlins set up there ? And still our governments allow big businesses to get away with polluting the invironment, while blaming the public for not doing their bit. Unfortunately for humanity and the world, money & greed talk! Positively balmy. Belfast is 8C today. At least the company would talk back and shout and cheer for murdering fuckers

🙁 Oh well this is also worthy of a mention for balance Esquitx17 it's no problem for evolution ... it's the turn of the insects Fucking, and I mean this sincerely, Hell! Temperature was taken in Seymour Island....Far to the north...

Antarctica hits record high heat as it goes above 20°C for first time in historyIt broke the most recent record which was broken less than a week ago. RT : Not a good sign...

Antarctic is actually below -20C..... I’m off to bark the v8 up but will have the heater on max heat,go figure.. Ummmmmmm The increase in warming of the planet has been consistent with the increase of fossil fuel use and carbon emissions. This a fact. You can kick and scream and deny climate change and blame it on weather but graphs and facts don’t lie. Listen to science ClimateChange

These days weather usually up and down ashishmalla Not cold enough to stutter 'when ya feel a little P P P PECKISH, P P P PICK UP A PENGUIN'. Remember that advert? Seymour Island is much closer to Argentina than it is to the South Pole. Similar temperatures were reached in the 1980s. At the South Pole right now, as I write this the temperature at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole station is -39C (-56C with wind chill)

So penguins seem to be out on a trek. It's summertime in the Southern Hemisphere.

Duchess of Cambridge turns snake charmer as she handles reptile in Northern Ireland'Is there a way to hold her? Wow, look at that.' Duchess of Cambridge turns snake charmer as she handles reptile in Northern Ireland I'm sure the headline would be different if it was Meghan with the snake. The weird British media with their unpredictable people will never stop to amaze me. TBF, her sister-in-law, MeghanMarkel, handled a snake far more confidently by spurning piersmorgan’s advances

I'm so pleased that the penguins will not be so cold!! Bless them!! FAKE NEWS !!!! Records from when? It seems this single measurement was taken at a point as far from the South Pole as Oslo is from the North Pole. Alarmists and BBC need to ask themselves: 1) would they be as hysterical if Oslo reached 20C in August; and 2) would they pretend that 20C applied to the whole Arctic

I'm sure it's done it many times before in the last 4bn years, but humans weren't around to make a big deal of it. Move along, nothing to see. Climate rises and falls all the time Your just plugging your greta story just cause u signed her up Scrap the illegal tv licence Its the first time on record but not the first time. We haven’t always been here .

That’s about 70°F, global warming naysayers, because I wouldn’t expect you to know how to convert from Celsius. The new Costa can't wait.
