“Making the switch from curation to creation is so thrilling,” AnnieMacmanus tells British Vogue.

The page-turning exploration of grief, addiction, young motherhood and unbreakable family ties is the product of an intensive writing course with the Ink Academy. “I was the clichéd mature student, just lapping it all up,” she says, smiling at the memory of putting her English Lit degree to good use. “Making the switch from curation to creation, and that basic process of starting the day with nothing and coming out with something, was so thrilling.

Snatched hours here and there, between parenting, DJing, broadcasting and mentoring, and the simplified life enforced by the pandemic enabled her to get her debut done. She recalls the euphoria of her final weekend of editing, holed up in her manager’s office, lost in her notes and relishing being “a complete dork”.

Next time around, she’s sticking to the old adage “write what you know”, and penning a first person piece of London life over the course of a year. Ruminating on her own experiences is also helping Macmanus to piece together her legacy at the radio station she has shored up and lent integrity to. “Traditionally I have a terrible memory,” she admits.

Handing in her notice was “strangely prophetic”, because, she says, it was like “I kind of died a little bit”. She likens the sensation to the episode ofwhen it’s wrongly reported the character Moira Rose has died. “All these tributes kept pouring in and I was kind of like, ‘Guys! I’m back on air tonight!’”

“Writing and podcasting are so personal that it feels right to do them from my full name,” says Macmanus. “I’m taking it back.”Listeners took the news personally because of the association between Macmanus’s voice and her upbeat, zeitgeisty music choices and their own memories.
