Jair Bolsonaro is deploying the army to help fight the fires, but some - including world leaders - say he is not doing enough.

World leaders have expressed concern at the state of the Amazon rainforest, which is considered the world's lungs because it is a vital absorber of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

But Brazil's right-wing president sees the area as crucial for his country's economic development and has previously vowed to open it up to mining, logging and agriculture. Some accuse him of encouraging deforestation. But the Brazilian government says European countries are exaggerating the problem, with Mr Bolsonaro saying:"It's not easy to fight deforestation - our Amazon area is bigger than all of Europe."The states worst affected are Mato Grosso, Para and Amazonas, which fall within the Amazon region

Too little too late. Shame on Brazilian president, blaming others and giving a speech about not tolerating criminals, in my eyes Brazilian president is the biggest criminal on this planet. Incompetence in leadership is across many countries. I'm boycotting everything Brazilian.

Meat consumption IS unhealthy, IS inhumane and IS responsible for the fires in the Amazon, ocean dead zones and huge CO2, and methane emissions. Please start talking about this. We need governments to stop subsidies to animal agriculture and we need plant based food systems

Sky News, please start educating the masses - like you have with plastic, about the effects of animal agriculture. Humans breeding, feeding, exploiting and slaughtering 70 BILLION animals every year is destroying our planet.

HJ_Hodges Brazil’s first duty is to feed and employ Brazilians. If you pricks want to protect the Amazon with your taxpayers money maybe you should offer to purchase it. Like the US purchased Alaska and just contemplated purchasing Greenland HJ_Hodges If we need Brazil to save its forests for the good of mankind . Mankind should assist Brazil , not dictate what a sovereign nation can do .

Amazon wildfires: Brazil and France clash over burning rainforestThe number of forest fires in Brazil - more than 74,000 - has increased by 83% compared with the same period last year, with smoke that is visible from 400 miles up in space Really don’t know why they don’t leave Brazilian rain forest alone. There is no magic, illness curing fruit in there, nothing that will make you look 10 years younger. Industrialised countries who produce an excess of CO2 should have to pay towards the upkeep and perhaps subsidise these farmers so that they protect the forest, and not burn it. It’s a world problem. Idiot Macron and that berk from Ireland seek only political gain for themselves.
