'A stitch in time saves nine' Boris Johnson used the phrase as he announced new restrictions, but what does it mean?

The phrase basically means it's better to solve a problem right away, to stop it becoming a much bigger one.The idea is that sewing up a small rip with one stitch means the tear is less likely to get bigger, and need more - or, well, nine - stitches later on.

That's a lot to fit on the front of the Downing Street podium so you can see why the prime minister's using the short version.End of Twitter post by @GeorgieProRadio The point Boris Johnson was going for was that asking bars and restaurants to shut earlier now will hopefully mean there's not a huge wave of coronavirus cases in a month or so and a tougher lockdown won't be needed.

It means NWO is on the way!

It means both his speeches were written for him by someone else pulling the strings, no chance then of him fluffing his lines & putting his foot in it. All choreographed

Time to cancel this phrase. It’s outdated.

It basically means that if you put a needle and thread through any timepiece, then somewhere in the world nine other similar timepieces will be saved. It's basically a sacrifice kind of thing. Not sure if it includes smart watches though; it is quite an old saying after all.

Using outdated phrases to pretend to be on top of a new reality - yep, that sounds like BorisJohnson

Why don’t you ask Johnson what he means. Let’s face it, he’s the one with the world beating, absolutely fantastic, oven ready, microwaveable, tub thumping, butter churning, first past the post, blustering waffle. Isn’t he. JohnsonHasFailed

Boris’ other favourite proverb: A bird in the hand and two more in the bush

It means....

A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. Shame no one told him before Brexit.

FUND THE BBC!

You got nothing better to do, it a very common phrase.

People took to Google. Seriously? Nobody has any general knowledge anymore. We are surrounded by accessible information more than any other generation & yet society is dumber than ever.

I guess when someone needs continuously reminding of something then the recipient ends up reciting the message.

Thinking about it, has anybody explained this to the PM or Boris?

Apologies if a repeat but surely he meant 'snitch'?

Yawn

It means he's a knob.

Fu€k off!! Surely this is a joke!? Does this need explaining, I mean REALLY, does it?

In that case BorisJohnson get out your needle and thread and fix TestAndTrace, get over capacity, allow those not infected to live their lives Covid_19

Ask Norman.

Basically nothing

It means he should have more HINDSIGHT.

It means he's an idiot.

Boris should have started stitching earlier, that’s what it means 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄

Confused by Covid ‘Numbers’, ‘Advice’ ‘Rules’ 'U-turns' 'Laws' 'Circuit-breakers'? Why Brexit is a priority while we have Highest Deaths, Deepest Recession in Europe? Why you can't get a Test and they tell you that you are Carping? You have every right to be Confused!

It means he's a bed wetting fool.

Conservatives SkyNews jessphillips UKLabour It means that he admits not stitching in time. Your question is as daft as his comments.

This is ridiculous!

Its just a shame that a stitch in time didn't save 65,000 excess deaths.

A fool is always a fool!

Dick and Dom in number 10 kill very many men.

A v old joke from my youth: mother of 8 sews up husband’s pyjamas. Why? A stitch in time saves 9. Quite appropriate really 😝

Is the stitch required to keep the camels hump flattened?

Propaganda

In the context of Covid, FUCK ALL.

Why are the BBC making an issue about it !!!!

It's the secret phrase he's supposed to say when he wants Dominic Cummings to come to his rescue

Do one now! That will save doing more later!

It means AAAHHH MMMM, next question?

Does it mean a facile media will always focus on a boris distraction, no matter how pathetic it is?

Copied Gove

Am American and have heard saying many years ago. Its mildly surprising that people have never heard it, but really surprising people couldn’t figure out what it means. Like, it’s pretty obvious dumb dumbs

Could it be 'a STITCH-UP' in time saves 'NINE' ?

Should’ve been mask 5 stay alive, mask in 9 just in time.

Decode 'A stitch in time saves nine' in Simple Gematria equals: 258 'Microchipped Population' also equals: 258

please explain......

Just another Asshat of a saying that’s exactly the opposite of what happened at the start! Just another ridiculous saying to remind ourselves of whilst gasping for air in a hospital bed

Too many immigrants in one basket?

Johnson is stitching the whole country up& not in the way that will alleviate blood loss.

It means restrictions should have been done months ago

Snitches get stitches 😂😂😂😂 biker4ta Beverly03119447

He also used the phrase 'let rip'. As for a stitch in time, you'd need to be aware of the NEED to stitch. And if you were, you'd have an opportunity to save nine. The prime minister should apply this insight to core government policy, to fix all our problems. Parliament

BBCSimonMcCoy David King interview 1410. Simon you asked about test, trace. Instead you indulged him in political attacks on govt, lockdown, private enterprise, zero facts on test trace. Interview was a disgrace. DCMS OliverDowden julianknight15 didoharding ajcdeane afneil

because soooooooooooo many people are dying, that your snitch ass mothefucking call is gonna save 9 lives. what a load of crap

I see that the concept of mending things is now considered archaic. We are doomed as a species.

Cummings is earning his money.

He mean't to say ... A snitch in time saves nine.

Shame BorisJohnson hadn’t known this phrase in January. Maybe the so called Great Britain would be in a better place with this coronavirus COVID19 But then again it’s a shambles of a Conservatives party anyway so probably wouldn’t have made any difference.

If you have to explain it isn’t that bad messaging? mrjamesob

Are you serious?

I think it is obvious what this saying means, the fact that so many people need it explaining to them is the reason that the virus is coming back, come on people use your common sense!

It means the BBC no longer bother with proper journalism and instead trawl Twitter for worthless shite.

😂🤣😂Yes - he’s a bit late for that. Leadership would have stitched the matter in Feb 20. I guess here we are in Sept! He’s just so so lost the plot! Bit of stress and character starting to crumble! What a mess

Does it mean that many a mickle makes a muckle?

I think it means if you do a repair quickly, you will probably prevent more damage in time. It's just a hunch.

why don't BorisJohnson practice what he preaches then the country could move on without the actual problem ? himself

Ironically the couldn't stitch the torn cloth in time, and now they want to save nine?

I anything means much to Boris other than what will save his neck

Nothing, though you and others are reporting on it rather than the many failures of BorisJohnson and the cabal around him.

Of all the garage, random snatches of Latin, racist schoolboy limericks, and hidden nods to chums the man spouts everyday, this one is the easiest to understand.

This phrase should be updated to 'A test in time save 9 lives!' Clown Johnson is way out of his depth!

This would have applied 7 months ago. Not now.

Good thing I've got these guys nearby then

A 'news' story written by idiots, for idiots. Can I have my money back please?

I find this shocking, it's self explanatory and a common phrase all over the country, is London the exception

he got it wrong 'A stitch in time saves London'

What did he mean by spiritually? Is he having a seance with Thatcher? I can't believe he pretends to be a Christian, he's not exactly living a pious life.

If only the phrase was relevant in this situation. Which it isn't.

if i understand this lucifer's exact meaning it an old saying that means that if you do this now and there won't be pain later in this case🖕 😷❔

Really?!? Could you not infer the meaning from the rest of his speech 🤦‍♂️

'This is London calling, you are listening to the BBC, now a detailed analysis of a sewing reference.'

White Power sign and possible prick. Makes total sense.

Stitched the country up!!

Or in his case, too little too late

A more pertinent question might be 'why is the Prime Minister using ambiguous phrases that need to be deciphered when he's discussing crucial public heath policy?'

I think a re-release of that old Norman Wisdom classic is now well overdue..... I've prepared the cinema flyer in readiness. Bojo covidbriefing Covid19UK BorisJohnson stitch stitchintime

Next week: 'More haste, less speed' explained. Ffs...

More like, 'a stitch in eight lockdown too late'

it means, I'm as confused as the rest of the government, so I'll talk gibberish and nonsense and hope nobody notices.

I thought that was a pretty well-understood and widespread idiom, but I need to stop being surprised by people.

It means whatever he wants it to mean, said Dominic.

Boris’s Favourite Quote: A stitch in time saves nine. Meaning: Why do it properly, when I can do it quickly? Boris Johnson is using this as his go to catchphrase when dealing with the Coronavirus Pandemic. Walloper.

Really? Is that the best you've got

It means, if he had done something, anything, back in February when he could see the virus moving through Europe, then we wouldn't be in this position now.

Really Boris?

God I'm old... I never would have guessed this had to be explained

BBC. Who the fuck are your journalists?
