The education secretary has ruined exam results for thousands of young people. Next week, with GCSEs, things could be even worse

One day, the pandemic will be over, and face masks and sanitisers and alert levels and Rishi’s dishes will all be a memory. But the Covid Class of 2020 will still have their A-level and GCSE exam grades on their life’s records. Some will have lost places on degrees, or training, and their lives will have been changed. Others will be struggling to explain to future employers why their results nosedived at age 18. All will carry the fallout of Gavin Williamson’s lamentable decision-making.

So, the algorithm was tested, failed miserably and was used nonetheless? Strange.

'Computer says no…'

Can do a very simple comparison of our A level handling and the approaches taken by France abd Germany . They must have a similar problem ? Is our approach world beating again ?

A-levels were a farce last year too. It was easier to get a A in a Stem subject than it was to get a B in English. Hows that fair? A-levels are a disgrace! We need change now! To stop the rest of the generation who will take exams being screwed over!

All the schools were closed from April, all the A-levels students could have sat their exams in June enough room in the schools for social distance and enough teachers on furlong from all schools to oversee the exams in their specific areas. Then no Dramas over the Results

How can we trust that they will develop a good appeal system in a few days when the system they developed in 5 months is so flawed. examshambles Alevels LevellingDown

The algorithm to be used in NI for GCSE is shocking because it uses a large weighting of school GCSE averages to calculate current cohort grades. Teacher predictions are being marginalised in final grading. StephenNolan doing great journalism on it .

The A-level students sat their mocks last year all these students were doing up to lock down in March 2020 was revising over there work, ensuring their course work was up to date and when sitting their exams would achieve the same results as the mocks or higher. So sit the EXAMS

Gavin Williamson & Ofqual have in effect branded 40% of teachers/schools damn liars NEUnion HeadteacherNews they claim the model knows kids’ grades better than teachers who have known them for years. They hid model from statistics experts Did Ofqual write track & trace app?🤦‍♂️

An excellent balanced article.

Everything about the Government's handling of education during the pandemic has been a farce: The fsm voucher scheme; The laptop scheme; The wider opening in June; The reopening in September; Guidance from the DfE; A level results and, presumably GCSEs.

A few questions : 1)2020 is a special case- it stands alone. Why the concern about grade inflation? 2)Given Cummings concern with data and stats how come no one did the analysis ? 3) if they did, how come they went ahead?

If you let teachers grade then you need moderation to avoid teachers gaming the system. If you have moderation you will have hard cases unless the moderator has perfect knowledge. Equally not every lower grade is unwarranted. Ofqual had no choice, Scottish route is even worse.

Our daughter who has straight As at gcse and places to study medicine was dropped four grades from a B to a U in physics and lost her places. No appeal will right this injustice. Please keep this issue in the news

He needs to go, he wrecked so many hopes and dreams.

Good review of crisis. Gibb should also go as he is the schools minister with direct responsibility. The individual grades are basically made up and indiscriminately awarded. no alternative but to use teacher grades for this year

The farce was lockdown for a mild illness harmless to sixth formers. I’m not sure how you can flawlessly award AlevelResults accurately to students who missed a big chunk of their A levels. Covid19UK

Total farce. Worse. They’ve got Ben & Jerry’s pointing the way in immigration & should recruit Tom & Jerry for the total mess this is. Thousands of young people used as pawns in a political game thanks to Williamson’s lazy incompetence.

It is time for everyone of these children to lobby their MPs. The only way to achieve change from this Govrt is for the Tory MPs themselves to see that change is needed.

Once schools closed it was never avoidable. There is no fair way once school was removed. Notice nobody has come up with a better solution yet.

Gavin Williamson under pressure to resign over A-level results 'fiasco'Lib Dems say minister is ‘out of excuses’ and Labour calls for results system to be scrapped Unfortunately the days of ministers resigning over their own fiascoes are long gone. He's more likely to get a medal. I would prefer he fixed it and then resigned. Resigning and walking away is too easy ... What an utter failure. Shouldn’t be surprising he’s a Tory.
