I went to a small gathering where everyone was fully vaxxed and went to shake someone’s hand out of old habit and he looked at me like I was carrying the plague.

Establish your position early on. Also the hugger needs to ask permission, just launching in for a hug is a no-no at the moment without knowing first if they're hug friendly.
