The chancellor did the right things in March but has done precious little since. From this week, his safety net unravels, says Guardian columnist Aditya Chakrabortty

For a hint of what the near future of this country holds, talk to Emily Pringle. At the end of June, she advertised a job with her home-fragrance firm, Notes of Northumberland. Based in pretty Alnwick, with lovely colleagues – 16 hours a week, working mainly in the shop. Pringle might ordinarily expect 40-odd CVs. This time, she was deluged: within a fortnight, almost 600 people applied.

over hyped. Thatcher got away with mass unemployment, so will bojo. expect a war.

I vividly recall the Thatcher years. People who did keep their jobs despised the unemployed. The news had daily reports, like'2,000 jobs have been lost today' , for many months. For decades many job losers had no control over their fate. Utterly miserable.

You wish You really are a sorry bunch of Britain haters, get behind the country instead of constantly undermining it.

Would have been better if you have given a solution as to the way forward.

One thing that annoys me, HS2 & other big buck projects. These could be delayed for say, 5 years, & the cash saved used to power the economy through the worst of this pandemic. I keep reading we'll feel the full negative effect of this on the economy in 2 or 3 years time!

2 yrs of business making preparations to move from UK in event of resultant inferior, insufficient trade deals. Headlines have been there. Trillion in finance business transferred to EU. Banks, business setting up EU HQs. UK cut out of supply chains. Covid is an additional blow

Nope

As usual with the left £500 billion isn't enough. They demand people get paid 80%salaries for ever more to sit at home. A chancellors job isn't to simply give money away, as Corbyn discovered in December, it's to balance income and outgoing and debt.

Nothing wrong with scented candles 🕯

ABERDEEN.SNP Scotland following Mad Lying Tory Johnston’s rules !Without track trace app whole towns cities and counties have to be shut down instead of individuals.Experimenting by reopening state schools on MONDAY!! Just like Poll Tax let see what happens in Scotland!65000 dead

We should have thrown everything we had & every resource available into a mass testing programme .. not shut down the country.

This has been obvious from the start. Not only a jobs crisis but a funding crisis that will be paid for by the few who do have jobs. This over-reaction to a virus that has a low death rate is unbelievable.
