A pregnant woman was hospitalised after she was punched and stomped on in what has been described as an “Islamophobic attack” in Sydney, Australia.

Security camera footage shows a man approaching three women wearing hijabs as they chatted in a cafe on Wednesday, Nov 20.

The 43-year-old suspect can be seen lunging across the table to punch a 31-year-old woman before stamping on her head.

It is believed the victim, who is 38 weeks pregnant, was randomly targeted.

Police have charged a suspect with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and affray. The suspect has been refused bail.

According to police the woman was taken to hospital after the attack and later discharged.

The Australian Federation of Islamic Councils, a leading Islamic organisation, said the assault was “clearly a racist and Islamophobic attack”.

They added that the man was heard "yelling anti-Islamic hate speech at the victim and her friends".

Police inspector Luke Sywenkyj revealed that without intervening bystanders the attack could have been more severe.

"If it were not for the brave actions of these members of the community in stopping the assault the victim may very well have sustained much more serious injuries," he said.
