Netflix dropped the third season of The Crown on Sunday, November 17 and already it has been deemed an entertaining and gripping watch. But in episode four, someone is referred to as “sweetie”. But who was it? And does Prince Philip (played by Tobias Menzies) really call Queen Elizabeth II (Olivia Colman) “cabbage”?

In the fourth episode of The Crown, entitled Bubbikins, Prince Philip’s mother Princess Alice (Jane Lapotaire) is flown from Greece following the imposition of military rule,
The Duke of Edinburgh objected to having her at Buckingham Palace while the Royal Family filmed a documentary with the BBC
However, the Queen goes behind his back and asks she is brought to the palace immediately.
During this episode, Prince Philip is seen sitting at his desk speaking into the tannoy, calling for “sweetie”.

One of the Queen’s advisors assumes it is her he is trying to reach and so goes into her office to let her know.
To this, she replies: “I’m not sweetie, I’m darling or cabbage. Someone else is sweetie.”
The episode then shows someone in riding boots walking towards Prince Philip’s office.
We then discover it is actually Princess Anne (Erin Doherty) who he calls “sweetie”.
This is the first time she appears in The Crown so we can be sure to expect more of her in the next couple of seasons.
Does Prince Philip really call the Queen 'cabbage'?
The simple answer to this is yes, one of the Duke of Edinburgh’s pet names for Queen Elizabeth II is “cabbage”.
Royal biographer Robert Lacy previously confirmed this sweet detail to The Sunday Times.
When asked if this was true, he said: “Yes, I’ve heard that is how he will sometimes refer to her.”
The Crown isn’t the first time the nickname has been used on-screen either when referring to the Queen.

The nickname also cropped up in 2006’s The Queen starring Helen Mirren and James Cromwell as Prince Philip.
In one scene, Queen Elizabeth II is seen in bed at Balmoral.
Removing his dressing gown and ready to get into bed, the Duke of Edinburgh says: “Move over, cabbage.”
Talking about the scene, screenwriter for the film as well as The Crown Peter Morgan said: “I inquired in royal circles and was told on very good authority that that is what the duke sometimes calls the Queen.”.
This is not the only nickname the Queen has had over the years.
When she was growing up, her father King George VI used to call her “Lilibet” because she couldn’t pronounce her name properly.
According to a memoir by journalist Richard Kay, Prince William also used to call the Queen “Gary” before he could say “granny”.
Prince George has also been reported to call his grandmother “Gan-Gan”.
