“Well, you have got to look at the queen as two people, she’s Queen, head of state and she’s also a mother,” Dickie replied.

“She will be looking at her son and asking, ‘Did this really happen?’

“She has to put on a brave face in public, she has to be collegiate in public.

“But in private, she will really want to know what is going on and I don’t think she’s getting answers.”

Dickie added he thinks Prince Andrew “really needs to step back”.

His remarks came after Chuka Umunna called Prince Andrew “a disgrace”.

“I just think he’s a complete disgrace. I cannot believe the interview that happened and I do not understand why public figures, especially politicians have been pulling their punches on this,” he said.

“Look, the monarchy continues to exist with consent, and he has done more to undermine - democratic consent if you can call it that - in the monarchy than any member of that family than I have seen in my lifetime.

“He has let down the institution, I think the lack of self-awareness is breathtaking.

“He should go to the US, give evidence where needed and do the right thing because he’s done too many of the wrong things so far.”

Mr Umunna concluded: “He hasn’t done the right thing and he needs to do the right thing.”

Meanwhile, ex-protection officer Dai Davies, said he wants to see the protection records to back up the Duke of York’s claims he had visited a Pizza Express in 2001.

Susanna asked: “A lot of people are asking about the royal protection officers, he says he was at Pizza Express in Woking. What access do people have to those records?”

“It’s a question I’ve been taking myself since I had dealings with them,” Mr Davies replied.

“They[royal protection officers] would’ve gone with him, let’s face it they certainly would’ve gone there, advanced it and remained with him. There would have been back up as well.”

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays on ITV at 6am.
