HOLLYOAKS has beaten rivals Coronation Street, EastEnders and Emmerdale to be crowned Best Soap at the Inside Soap Awards 2019.

It was a big night for the Chester-based show, with Stephanie Davis and Adam Woodward taking top individual honours in the Best Actress and Best Actor categories, respectively.

The show had the least nominations of the four main soaps with 10, but managed to claim the three most prestigious awards.

Emmerdale and EastEnders both bagged four awards while Corrie took home three.

Neighbours did the double with Best Daytime Soap and Ryan Maloney winning the Best Daytime Star, while Holby City and Casualty each netted one award.

It's been a big year for Steph after she returned to Hollyoaks as Sinead O'Connor following a turbulent few years in which she had a baby boy with ex Jeremy McConnell.

She beat Alison King (Carla Connor, Coronation Street), Gillian Wright (Jean Slater, EastEnders) and Lucy Pargeter (Chas Dingle, Emmerdale) to scoop her award for an emotional rape storyline that saw the nurse left mentally and physically tortured by her abusive husband Laurie Shelby.

Writing on social media after learning of her win, she posted: "THANKYOU TO EVERYONE WHO VOTED FOR ME🙏🏽 AND FOR HOLLYOAKS WINNING BEST SOAP!

Brody Hudson actor Adam triumphed over soap heavyweights Jack P Shepherd (David Platt, Coronation Street), Danny Dyer (Mick Carter, EastEnders)and Jeff Hordley (Cain Dingle, Emmerdale).

He recorded a thank you message to his fans on his Instagram Stories before heading to the venue.

Readers of Inside Soap magazine voted over the summer for their favourite stars and shows – in 18 categories from Best Actor and Actress to Best Shock Twist, Best Partnership and Best Soap.

The mag's editor Steven Murphy said: “It’s been an amazing soap year – in fact, the awards have never been more keenly fought.

"We can’t wait to hand out the trophies to our winners tonight. Looking down the winners list, the UK should be extremely proud of our soaps and our soap stars, as the breadth of talent among the winners is astonishing. We can’t wait to celebrate all that is great about our wonderful soaps.”
