THRIFTY mum Mel Phillips-Peters loves a McDonald's breakfast - but she's found a way to make her own DIY version using food from Morrisons.

She assembled four sausage, bacon and cheese muffins, two hash browns and orange juice.

The equivalent in McDonald's would've cost £7.78 - and they had plenty to spare for the next day.

Buy another pack of cheese muffins for 50p and your morning meal is sorted for the whole week.

In fact, there's enough ingredients to make two breakfast meals each - the same at McDonald's would come in at just under a cool £16.

"We fancied McDonald's breakfast but find it's never filling and can be costly if you want two meals each...so we decided to do our own." Mrs Phillips-Peters, a stay-at-home mum, told The Sun.

Wanting to share her money-saving tips, Mrs Phillips-Peters took to the Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK Facebook group to share her savvy steal.

The post has been liked over 500 times and has scores of money savers commenting.

Mrs Philips-Peters suggested to her husband, 27, a civil servant, that they should buy a pack of hash browns for £1 and "do our own Maccies, save a lot of money and still have leftovers."

The makeshift McDonald's included flattened pork meatballs to get both the taste and texture of the fast food chain's iconic sausage patties,

Saying she would definitely do this again, she added that she and her husband didn't feel a difference in taste.

It's also the healthier option - a McDonald's sausage and egg McMuffin contains 430 calories, with Mrs Phillips-Peters confirming "it was less greasy too."

Compiling the same morning sandwich, the Morrisons version comes in at 350 - almost 100 less.

Of course, sometimes you just can't beat the taste of a true Maccies - but if you're looking to save some pennies - and calories - this is your trick.
