There were tears from England fans this evening.
Speaking to ITV after the match, Southgate remained vague about his future with the England squad.
When asked if he would stay on as manager, he said: "After every tournament, we've sat down and reviewed and reflected.
"So we need a bit of time to make sure everyone makes the right decisions."
He is officially contracted until 2024.
Addressing a question about the performance of the referee, he said: "Pointless me going into that. I'd rather talk about our players. Congratulations to France. They know they've been in a hell of a game. I don't think we could have done any more."
He also refused to condemn captain Harry Kane for his missed penalty.
"For me, we win and lose as a team," he said.
"We let two [goals] in and missed chances. Harry [Kane] has been incredible for us. So reliable. We wouldn't be here if not for the goals he's scored for us.

● England have lost all three of their World Cup matches against reigning champions, with all three coming in the quarter-final stage of the competition (2-4 vs Uruguay in 1954, 1-3 vs Brazil in 1962 and 1-2 vs France tonight).
England has said it is "heartbroken" but added that it "wasn't meant to be".
The Prince of Wales has sent his condolences to the team following their defeat.
Despite being "absolutely gutted" at the result, former England player Wayne Rooney has congratulated Kane for equalling his goal-scoring record.
Sir Geoff Hurst - who was on the winning team for England's 1966 victory - has tweeted that he is proud of every single player on tonight's team.
