Kate Middleton opened up on own mental health as Duchess described 'mum guilt’

KATE, Duchess of Cambridge, previously opened up about her struggles with "mum guilt".

Tomorrow, Kate will visit Shout 85258’s headquarters to mark the text messaging support service reaching over one million conversations with those in need. The service launched publicly two-and-a-half years ago to help people who are struggling with mental health receive immediate support. The digital service became increasingly critical during the pandemic as it was one of the few mental health support services able to operate as normal during lockdowns.

Since becoming a member of the Royal Family 11 years ago, Kate has become patron of a number of charities committed to improving mental health, particularly in young people.

For instance, the Duchess of Cambridge has been royal patron of Place2Be, a mental health charity that provides counselling and emotional support to children and teachers, since 2013.

Two years later, Kate also helped launch the first ever Children’s Mental Health Week.

Once, however, Kate stunned royal watchers by candidly speaking about her own difficulties with 'mum guilt'.

In 2020, the Duchess of Cambridge opened up about her feelings of guilt surrounding motherhood on a podcast with former ‘I’m a Celebrity’ contestant Giovanna Fletcher.

Speaking on ‘Happy Mum, Happy Baby’, Kate admitted she found it difficult to leave Prince George, Prince Charlotte and Prince Louise to carry out official royal duties.

When Ms Fletcher asked if Kate struggled with mum guilt, the Duchess of Cambridge replied: “Yes absolutely.

“Anyone who doesn’t as a mother is actually lying.”

She added: “It’s a constant challenge, you hear it time and time again from mums.

“[You’re] always sort of questioning your own decisions and your own judgements and things like that.

“I think that starts from the moment you have a baby.

“The more people you have around your children who are safe and loving and caring, the better.

“So yeah ‒ it was a real weight off my shoulders that actually it’s not totally my responsibility to do everything, because you know we all have good days, bad days, and you can dilute that with others who aren’t on that particular day struggling.

“I think it makes such a difference for your child, keeping them as constant and happy as possible.”

In the candid interview, Kate also revealed she found it “terrifying” bringing her first-born, George, home for the first time.

She explained: “For me being in hospital, I had all the memories of being in hospital because of being sick [with acute morning sickness] so it wasn’t a place I wanted to hang around in.

“So I was really desperate to get home and get back to normality.”

When George was born, Kate emerged from the hospital and put the young prince into the car to drive away.

However, she admitted: “You’re driving away with a newborn baby. It’s terrifying.”

As well as her work in mental health, Kate has shown a commitment to children’s formative education throughout her time in the Royal Family.

Last year, she even established the Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood.

The foundation focuses on three areas ‒ research, awareness campaigns and the development of new solutions with public and private voluntary sectors.
