When it comes to denim, there's little to follow in the way of 'trends'. Occasionally you'll opt for a rip, sometimes you'll flirt with a flare, and every now and then you'll consider a slightly deeper blue than usual. But other than that? We tend to stick pretty religiously to our tribes: the high waisted jeans fans, boyfriend jeans brigade or Team Mom Jean.
That said, this is a major denim trend that took over our wardrobe in the nineties that's making a real comeback right now. And I'm afraid to let you know it's the low-rise jean.

We've all fallen so deeply in love with the high-waist over the last couple of decades that we forgot there was other option when it comes to our jeans. But Kim Kardashian, Bella Hadid and Hailey Bieber have been reminding us that there, in fact, is.
Yep: the era of Paris Hilton, Christina Aguilera and the Destiny's Child trio nailing the hipster jean aesthetic is not as long-lost as we once thought, with dangerously low-slung situations making a comeback.
Kim Kardashian shared a photo to her Instagram feed wearing extremely loose-fitting jeans, featuring rips at the knees and thighs, while videos with the hashtag #lowrisejeans have been viewed 79.6M times (!) and counting on TikTok. Elsewhere, searches for low rise jeans are up 58% year on year according to global fashion shopping platform Lyst, and resale app Depop has reported a 36% increase in searches for low rise jeans in the past three weeks alone.

The rise in the popularity of the low rise jean trend has no doubt stemmed from our 00s and Y2K obsession, with claw clips, beaded jewellery and beaded phone straps all experiencing something of a resurgence of late, too.
As for styling? What was once reserved for a slim fit, the new new take is slightly less intimidating thanks to the more relaxed baggy jeans silhouette everyone's opting for. And it's a case of the lower the waistband the better. Make like Dua Lipa and expose over a yard (!) of midriff, or follow in the footsteps of Lizzo and opt for the “whale tale” by wearing your low rise jeans with the strap of your G-string visible.
And while the top half tends to remain relatively cropped in order to fully showcase the low-waist, they too are a tad more low-key than the Destiny's-Child-Era bralettes. We're talking loosely-unbuttoned cardigans, cropped kits and turned-up slogan tees.
