The Met Office has issued an update on when snow will hit the UK as freezing temperatures are set to last all week.

Temperatures will plunge below zero before Brits see any of the white stuff - which forecasters say will last some regions of the isles on Friday, January 28.

Forecasters see the mercury plunging to lows of -1C over the next seven days with the chill remaining in the low single-digits every night and reaching just over the 5C mark in daylight hours.

WXChart meteorologists predict snow will be first seen in Scotland before moving South to northern England, according to The Sun Online.

East Anglia is predicted to be hit with wintry showers early on January 29, before parts of the country between Aberdeen and Hampshire will then see snow on Sunday January 30.

The arctic chill follows the trend of recent days after the Met Office warned of -5C conditions amid blanketings of thick icy fog on Friday.

During the day, temperatures will be milder hours this week will see milder temperatures, reaching as high as 10C in the southwest while generally staying around the 6 or 7C mark.

But as night approaches the cold will take hold with bone-shaking chills of -1C seen in Wales on the coldest night of the week, which looks set to be the early hours of Tuesday morning.

The Met Office has also predicted snow for the first half of February.

Their long-range forecast reads: "Into February outbreaks of rain and stronger winds are likely at times across the far north, whereas settled conditions are likely to persist in the south.

"Temperatures are looking to be slightly above average, particularly in the north however some colder interludes remain likely, bringing a risk of occasional snow, most likely over northern hills.

Tonight:

Most areas dry with long clear periods and fog patches. Cloudier and windier in the far north with some rain at times. Colder than last night with widespread frost.

Monday:

A chilly start then most areas fine, dry and bright with plenty of sunshine once early fog patches clear. Cloudier in the very far north with rain at times.

Outlook for Tuesday to Thursday:

A cold and foggy start for some on Tuesday, with sunny spells developing. Rain arrives into the northwest later, sinking south but weakening through Wednesday. Thursday, dry with sunny spells.
