An Irish motorist was filmed bringing festive joy to fellow drivers near Dublin after covering their SUV in white Christmas lights.

The dark-coloured SUV was spotted covered in hundreds of bright white lights as it made its way along the M1 motorway, approaching the junction of Balbriggan on the Dublin-Meath border.

Paul McMurray was heading northbound on the motorway when he filmed the festive vehicle and hooted at the driver as he passed.

Paul McMurray saw the SUV driving along the M1 motorway outside Balbriggan in north County Dublin on November 28. The vehicle was covered in white strings of fairy lights which were stuck to the bodywork

He posted the footage online after filming it on November 28. He said: 'No idea who was driving but I hope they have a good Christmas if they see this.'

The dashcam footage shows Mr McMurray's car coming up behind the glowing vehicle.

As it draws up along aside a section of the string of lights can be seen flapping in the wind.

The Road Safety Authority of Ireland told MailOnline: 'The Lighting of Vehicle Regulations and the Type Approval Regulations sets out the requirements as to the position and characteristics of lighting fitted to vehicles in Ireland.

'These regulations are put in place to ensure the safety of vehicle's occupants and other road users.

'The Lighting of Vehicle Regulations, S.I. 189 of 1963, as amended, Article 48 (1), outlines that "No lamp which, when lit, is capable of misleading other traffic, shall be fitted to a vehicle”. These lights are for all intents and purposes light emitting lamps and pose a risk that could potentially distract and mislead other road users.

'In general the RSA would have a concern at such practice as it clearly has the potential to dazzle and distract other drivers. There is also a road safety concern around this lighting falling off the vehicle in transit which could pose a risk to road users.'

The RSA said that enforcement action was the responsibility of An Garda Siochana.

The brightly decorated SUV is not the first to catch the attention of other drivers at Christmas.

In December 2019, a similarly lit-up Land Rover was spotted at a service station in Raynes Park, London.

After filling up, the black Land Rover - which even sported LED lights along its aerial - pulled out of the service station and joined the A3 to London.
