It's that time of year again - we find out which baby names are topping the charts - and what has dropped in popularity.

It can be really tough to choose the perfect name for a child - with current-day trends influencing some parents, while others opt for a more traditional choice.

There are some firm favourites - with Olivia and Oliver coming in as the most popular names for boys and girls in England and Wales for eight years running.

But according to the Office for National Statistics, many previously popular choices are in danger of going extinct, while others already have.

According to the data for baby names, no boys were called Nigel in 2020 - making it 'extinct'.

As dramatic as it sounds, that could mean that only two babies were named Nigel last year, meaning it isn't fully unused.

The ONS only records a name if three or more children are called by it, for data protection purposes.

Interestingly, the chart isn't filled with outdated archaic names - in fact, it's likely you know people with them.

Let's take a look...

It's not only bad news for Nigel - Piers is also struggling, with just four babies registered with the name in 2020.

Meanwhile, there are only three Greg's - although Nicholas Braun's turn as Cousin Greg in Succession might help prevent a further decline.

There were only eight boys called Stuart, and three called Brad and Billie respectively.
