Naga Munchetty urges listeners to 'stop messaging her'

Naga Munchetty, 46, has branded her fellow BBC journalist Rory Cellan-Jones, 63, an “utterly brilliant man”, as she reacted to his announcement that he will be leaving the BBC after 40 years. The BBC Breakfast presenter took to Twitter to share an emotional message for Rory after he shared some “personal news” this afternoon.

Rory told fans that he will be moving away from his role as the BBC’s technology correspondent in October.

Naga was one of the first of many Twitter users to comment on Rory’s news.

She wrote in a heartfelt reply: “You utterly brilliant man - You will be sorely missed x.”

BBC Radio 4’s Evan Davis joined Naga in the comments section, adding: “Rory.. leaving already? Can't be true.. just as you are getting the hang of it. What is true though, is that you'll leave an Elon Musk sized hole in the BBC.. it'll take ten people and a dozen robots to replace you.”

BBC News reporter Marianna Spring also wrote: “You’re a total star Rory - and will be so missed by the BBC. Thank you for all of your encouragement and support in the world of online conspiracies - and always being both incredibly kind and clever! X.”

Rory went on to share some memories from his time with the BBC, as he detailed the big part the broadcaster has played in his career as a journalist.

He penned: “A few memories - I started in Leeds in 1981 as a researcher on Look North where a papal visit was an early assignment..

Elsewhere, Naga’s BBC Breakfast co-star Carol Kirkwood confirmed Louise Minchin’s likely successor after the presenter confirmed she would be leaving the programme later this year.

The BBC Weather presenter suggested newsreader Sally Nugent should take Louise’s place as BBC Breakfast anchor.

In a new interview with Radio Times, Carol said of Sally: “She fills in for Louise now anyway or Naga [Munchetty] but the decision of course, isn’t mine.

“If it was, [I’d pick] Sally, I think. I love Sally.”

The BBC have yet to confirm who will be joining current presenters Dan Walker, Naga Munchetty and Charlie Stayt on the red sofa.
